NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 2020

Dear community,

Welcome to the YESS newsletter!

We look back at a challenging 2020. COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down and, like most of the people, early-career researchers had to navigate the crisis.

Through YESS we tried to exploit all the potential of the network channeling our members ideas  and promoting the interaction through virtual platforms. We hosted several webinar series, virtual coffee breaks, twitter poster weeks, among others.

This newsletter provides insight in the latest developments. The list is exhaustive, but is not complete. Our website offers a better overview of all the activities we conduct and gives you the opportunity to collaborate.

We hope that, despite the current scenario, 2021 will connect us even more.

Outreach Working Group

We are delighted to announce our Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for 2020-2023 and beyond has been finalized. The YESS SAP outlines our plans, vision and mission, and puts forward pathways how to implement them. The document is the result of a consultation with present and past YESS members, as well as key partners and designed to be a living document, updated by YESS members periodically to address future challenges.

We thankfully received constructive comments by (scientific) leadership of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), including particularly the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP, co-sponsored with IOC-UNESCO & ISC); WCRP’s Core Projects: SPARC & GEWEX; Future Earth; TROP ISCU; PAUWES; as well as our honorary members about the role of YESS in the Earth system science community.

We warmly welcome you to have a look at the YESS’ SAP.
As YESS Community strives to serve as an international platform for ECRs to voice their perspectives and concerns, we developed an open survey in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic and distributed it to Earth science ECRs across the world. The survey is designed to understand the challenges ECRs are facing related to the pandemic and how YESS could strengthen a virtual environment to support ECRs’ development and success during the pandemic situation and in the future.

After a careful analysis of the 197 responses received, the YESS Community published a report titled “Early Career Earth system scientists during COVID-19 crisis: Lessons learned from an open survey”. The report summarized the common challenges ECRs are facing and made recommendations on how to build a supportive environment that facilitates sustainable development for ECRs in the post-pandemic world. Although the report focuses on ECRs, it is also relevant to the broader scientific community.

This last year has offered YESS members the opportunity to be involved in several international initiatives where they can help to shape the research landscape. Besides the selection of Carla Gulizia to integrate the GASS Panel from GEWEX, two members were selected to participate in the WCRP Academy initiative. The WCRP Academy will be WCRP’s training and knowledge dissemination activity. Its purpose is to develop and deliver climate science training and capacity exchange activities around the world.
The activity will be both inward, training the next generation of climate scientists, and outward, sharing knowledge with a broader community, facing. The members selected were Pablo Borges de Amorin, from Brazil and Feba Francis, from India.
As it was done in previous opportunities, the selection of YESS representatives was through an open invitation to the active community. A selection committee was appointed to review the applications received and shortlist the candidates that were finally selected by WCRP.
In YESS, we believe that through these open processes more YESS members have the chance to be involved and to represent YESS in the international community. We encourage all YESS members that would like to be considered for this type of opportunity to become active members in YESS, either working in a working group or nominating to be a Regional Representative.
We keep working with our panel to create more opportunities for our members and we thank all international organizations and research bodies that give YESS the chance to participate in their activities.

YESS at WWRP SSC and WCRP JSC

We were invited by the WMO’s World Weather Research Programme Scientific Steering Committee (WWRP SSC) to present the main progress and achievements of this year and to discuss ways forward to improve the interaction between ECRs and the weather community to foster their involvement in the WWRP activities.
This year's meeting was run entirely online and ExeCom members Marisol Osman and Nina Ridder represented YESS recording a presentation about the last activities and plans for 2021.
On the other hand, a new World Climate Research Programme Joint Scientific Committee virtual meeting took place in December. Former ExeCom member Gaby Langendijk and the YESS officer, Valentina Rabanal, represented YESS in the meeting.

We would like to thank WWRP and WCRP for the opportunity to be present in the events and show the community all the progress we made.

GAWTEC webinar series

The GAWTEC webinar series aims to provide scientific keynote presentations on atmospheric composition given by experts in their field and to provide a platform for exchange and questions for people interested in atmospheric composition, especially Early Career Researchers.

The first webinar, given by Dr. Martin Steinbacher (Empa, Switzerland), dealt with the importance of quality assurance and quality control for longterm in-situ atmospheric composition observations. In the second talk, presented by Dr. Andrea Kaiser-Weiss from the German Weather Service (DWD), we explored the topic of modelling of air masses and the impacts during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The remaining two webinars of the series are planned in January 2021 and are as following:

January 19th 2021
Rebecca Chewitt-Lucas and Bjorn Stevens will talk about the Elucidating the Role of Clouds-Circulation Coupling in Climate (EURECA) project – Caribbean field campaign.
January 21th 2021
Dagmar Kubistin and Jennifer Müller-Williams to give a presentation about the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS), a tall tower greenhouse gas monitoring in Germany.

YESS webinar series on climate change

Since June 2020, YESS community has hosted a science webinar series on multiple topics. The goal of the webinar series is to keep the community well informed with the latest research and broaden their knowledge in areas of the Earth sciences. As huge interests shown by the ECRs after the edition of the webinar series, the science webinar team comprising members from the Online Events and Science Working Groups (WGs) successfully conducted four webinars in the second edition of the webinar series between September and November 2020.

In the first webinar, Luisa Ickes talked about the Arctic, one of the most sensitive regions of the world when it comes to climate change. In the second webinar, Juan Rivera gave a presentation on “Water resources change in Central-Western Argentina under the Paris Agreement warming targets”.

On 22 October 2020, John C. Fyfe presented initial estimates of the potential effect of COVID-19 pandemic related short-term emission reductions on global and regional temperature and precipitation by analyzing the response of an Earth System Model to a range of idealized near-term emission pathways.

In the last science webinar, Roxy Mathew Koll from India gave the keynote speech on how the Indian Ocean warming has changed ocean circulation, raised the sea level, altered the monsoon patterns and churned out intense cyclones and even locusts in the recent years, and their societal impacts.

YESS & HIWeather webinar series

YESS and High Impact Weather (HIWeather), a 10-year research project of WMO’s WWRP, hosted a webinar series on citizen science between September and November 2020. The webinar series aimed to foster an understanding of resilience to high impact weather, worldwide, through improving forecasts for different timescales and enhance their communication and utility in social, economic and environmental applications.

The series consisted of five webinars conducted by experts from various disciplines. The first session introduced the series by discussing the overall concept of citizen science. The succeeding sessions of the webinar series covered existing or past citizen science projects. The speakers discussed their experiences with citizen science and how it has impacted their areas of research and interests. The last session covers a special topic on citizen science and weather education.
