AMA Fill Our Fleet and HEAR For Them Donation Drives

The AMA Fill Our Fleet initiative in Secord was a great success!

Thank you to all who came by to drop off donations to the Food Bank and HEAR For Them.

Over the two days, AMA filled FIVE 3'x 3' boxes with Food Bank donations. What an amazingly generous and supportive neighbourhood we have!

Stormwater Pond Dangers

Stormwater ponds are an important part of Edmonton's drainage infrastructure. However, due to the constant movement of water under the surface and when combined with the substances that are washed into the facility from streets, they are NOT safe for recreation activities. Recreation on these facilities is prohibited, and families should find safe winter recreation alternatives.

The Secord Community Ice Rink is an excellent alternative to playing on frozen stormwater ponds. Weather dependent, the ice rink is now open and ready for use, following safe COVID measures.  Please use responsibly.

Please make sure your kids understand the danger of playing on the ice of these ponds.

Secord Community Outdoor Ice Rink

We are happy to be able to again provide a great source of outdoor recreation for Secord residents in the form of the Community Ice Rink.  Here are some guidelines and advice for residents to follow with regard to what should and should not be acceptable when using the ice rink:

1. The Province of Alberta issued a State of Public Health Emergency on November 24 due to the rising cases of COVID-19, with strict mandatory restrictions on social gatherings for the next 3 weeks. Visit https://www.alberta.ca/covid19 for details.

2. From these mandatory restrictions, we have been advised that no more than 10 persons can be on the rink at any one time until the end of the three week duration of the Public Health Emergency.

3. We have also been advised that outdoor group sports or activities that may result in close contact of people from different households, whether organized or not, is not allowed.

4. Should people be allowed to skate with hockey sticks and pucks? Should people be allowed to shoot puck in the net? This is where the debate is. From consulting with others, it would appear that the answer to both of these questions is "Yes", as long as it is done individually. The Secord Community League will allow sticks and pucks to be used and allow shooting pucks in the net, as long as people do not play hockey games and people maintain physical distancing. No goalies or close contacts with others will be tolerated.

5. Because of the 10 person restriction and to minimize outsiders from using the rink, only Secord Community League members can use the rink. Please contact us to buy your $20 membership. Do not use the rink if you do not have a valid membership.

6. If you violate a public health order, you may be subject to a $1,000 fine. Additionally, you can be prosecuted for up to $100,000 for a first offense. If you are concerned someone is not following public health orders, you can:
- remind them that not following orders is against the law and puts people at risk; or
- call the AHS public health inspectors at 1-833-415-9179

7. We are all in this together, please abide to our rules and the government regulations, and ensure that your family and others also follow these rules and regulations. The use of the Secord ice rink is a privilege, not a right.

Any questions or clarifications, do not hesitate to send us a message through Facebook or e-mail.
If there are issues with compliance and numbers, we may have to look at hiring a rink attendant during the peak ice usage periods. Failure to abide to the rules and regulations may result in the rink being closed to all (which would be our last resort).

OPEN OR CLOSED?
Last but not least, as this is an outdoor rink the usability is weather-dependent; if the temperatures warm up for a longer period of time, we will close the rink as needed. Should you note that the rink is melting or breaking due to warm temperatures, please leave the ice and let us know.

Holiday Safety Tips for Your Pets

As you prepare for the holiday season, please keep your pets in mind to ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable time for all. Holiday decorations and treats can be trouble for pets. The following tips can help keep our furry friends healthy during the holidays.

  1. Christmas Trees - If you have decided to put up a real Christmas tree, please bear in mind that Tree water may contain pesticides, fertilizer and even aspirin or other chemicals. Drinking this water can cause poisoning in cats and dogs.
  2. Ribbons and Tinsel - Often shiny and very distracting, this string like material may cause a dangerous linear foreign body obstruction that requires surgery. Avoid using loose tinsel or other string-like materials and opt for safer pet friendly items.
  3. Holiday Plants and flowers - Poinsettias are known for their toxicity to pets, but they tend to have only mildly toxic effects. Holly and mistletoe are more dangerous if ingested. Flowers such as lilies and amaryllis are especially dangerous.
  4. Delicious Treats - A highlight of the holiday season for many is all the delicious food--chocolate, turkey, gravy, stuffing, the works. Keep the sweets and the leftovers out of reach of your family pets. Chocolate and anything sweetened with Xylitol can be toxic to your pets. Instead, make sure that you have special pet safe treats on hand. Stick with chew toys that are basically indestructible, and that can be stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible. Long, stringy things are a cat's dream, but the most risky toys for cats involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the intestines, often necessitating surgery. Instead, try a new ball that's too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the interactive cat toy.
