In our final newsletter of 2020, you’ll find a report and press release on a newly published ISAPP-led paper about the evidence linking live dietary microbes and health. A guest blog post describes a new regulatory decision in Spain related to the use of the term "probiotic" on food labels. Also, ISAPP board member Prof. Bob Hutkins contributes a blog post on why a product called “ambient yogurt” is becoming wildly popular in China.

Below you’ll read about a new collaboration between ISAPP and the NEC Society to create resources about probiotics for parents whose children are at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. And this month’s highlighted ISAPP resource is a video that focuses on the health benefits of probiotics.

New ISAPP-led paper calls for investigation of evidence for links between live dietary microbes and health

So far, recommended daily intakes for live microbes do not exist – but given this, are we missing out on a valuable opportunity to improve human health? To answer this question, scientists need to examine the evidence linking live dietary microbes with health benefits. Our blog post covers a new ISAPP-led publication in The Journal of Nutrition, which laid out the evidence needed to demonstrate health benefits of live microbes consumed by different populations around the world -- with a Q&A with all seven co-authors of the paper. ‘Probiotic’ on food labels in Europe: Spain adopts a pioneering initiative

It's well known in the industry that the word “probiotic” has not been allowed on food labels in Europe. In October 2020, however, Spain delivered an important new decision related to the use of the term probiotic for foodstuffs. ISAPP collaborates with NEC Society to help parents understand the role of probiotics in reducing the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis

The AGA guidelines released earlier this year recommended certain probiotics for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants. It's important for parents of preterm infants to learn about this potential use of probiotics in order to make informed decisions for their child. Recently, ISAPP has been working with the NEC Society to develop resources for parents. Read about these efforts in our new blog post.
