ISAPP Newsletter – December 19, 2020

We’re pleased to announce that ISAPP is now on Instagram! Check out our new account @ISAPPscience – where we share images and information on the topics of probiotics and prebiotics, tailored for dietitians and the general public.

In our final newsletter of 2020, you’ll find a report and press release on a newly published ISAPP-led paper about the evidence linking live dietary microbes and health. A guest blog post describes a new regulatory decision in Spain related to the use of the term "probiotic" on food labels. Also, ISAPP board member Prof. Bob Hutkins contributes a blog post on why a product called “ambient yogurt” is becoming wildly popular in China.

Below you’ll read about a new collaboration between ISAPP and the NEC Society to create resources about probiotics for parents whose children are at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. And this month’s highlighted ISAPP resource is a video that focuses on the health benefits of probiotics.

From the entire ISAPP board of directors, we wish you a very safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to sharing more exciting ISAPP initiatives in 2021!

New ISAPP-led paper calls for investigation of evidence for links between live dietary microbes and health

So far, recommended daily intakes for live microbes do not exist – but given this, are we missing out on a valuable opportunity to improve human health? To answer this question, scientists need to examine the evidence linking live dietary microbes with health benefits. Our blog post covers a new ISAPP-led publication in The Journal of Nutrition, which laid out the evidence needed to demonstrate health benefits of live microbes consumed by different populations around the world -- with a Q&A with all seven co-authors of the paper. (ISAPP’s press release about this paper can be found here.)

‘Probiotic’ on food labels in Europe: Spain adopts a pioneering initiative

It's well known in the industry that the word “probiotic” has not been allowed on food labels in Europe. In October 2020, however, Spain delivered an important new decision related to the use of the term probiotic for foodstuffs. Read about this new initiative, and how it could provide a model for other countries, in a guest blog post by Spain's Silvia Bañares and Miguel Gueimonde.

Ambient yogurts make a global impact

A certain type of yogurt product is becoming hugely popular around the world – ambient yogurt. In this blog post by Prof. Bob Hutkins, you'll learn what makes ambient yogurt different from traditional yogurt, and some of the reasons why it's currently a hot trend in China and elsewhere.

ISAPP collaborates with NEC Society to help parents understand the role of probiotics in reducing the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis

The AGA guidelines released earlier this year recommended certain probiotics for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants. It's important for parents of preterm infants to learn about this potential use of probiotics in order to make informed decisions for their child. Recently, ISAPP has been working with the NEC Society to develop resources for parents. Read about these efforts in our new blog post.

New Infographic: Probiotics and Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Check out ISAPP’s new infographic on probiotics and NEC prevention, produced in conjunction with the NEC Society. Aimed at parents of infants at risk for NEC, the new infographic can be downloaded and distributed to provide a quick summary of the issue.

Video: Health benefits of probiotics

Our featured video this month covers the health benefits of probiotics! Clearly, probiotics have a reputation for benefitting digestive health and immunity – but what does this mean in practice? Find out in this video (with subtitles in multiple languages).
