Comms Creatives content of the week! (Extra large portion)
It's been tough to choose this week, as I've seen loads of good stuff. So we have a winner and other some special mentions too.
And the winner of content of the week is....

Our SMMA members, Manchester Council, have knocked this out of the park.
The video is sweet and touching and beautifully animated.
What I love most is the text that goes with this.
It feels like it's written by someone (not a committee) who loves Manchester. Who is proud of the people they serve.
That moves me, and holds its own alongside some of the massive budget Christmas ads from huge retailers this year.
Special mentions go to Disney, Plaster Communications, and Hounslow Council.

What a fun and creative idea to turn the house from Christmas movie, Home Alone, into a fantastic gingerbread construction.
And spreading that joy with the Royal Marsden Hospital is just a stylish touch, reflecting our national mood of gratitude for the NHS.
|
|
Our friends as Plaster Communications, have worked with Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District on a cheery campaign around Bristol with festive song lyrics popping up all over the city.
Anything that gives me a Christmas earworm is alright by me.

|
Visually this is lovely, and I'm a huge fan of the nifty messaging that uses wordplay, a relevant pop culture reference and is perfectly concise.
Good stuff! 'Where are Doncaster Council?', you may be asking. I'll talk about them next week.

Do the can-can to improve your work
So many of our students and members tell us this:
“I want to do more creative and strategic social media, but...
I have too much work on
I don’t have time
People where I work don’t ‘get it’
... and I’m frustrated because I am busting with ideas I can’t implement.”
I’ve been there, many times, myself.
I think you’d be surprised to know how I’ve learned the most important lessons about this social media predicament.
It wasn’t from a fancy masterclass. It wasn’t from a wise mentor.
It was from my body.
Because I have an autoimmune condition that means my skin, joints and tendons get painful and swollen and I can get incredibly tired sometimes.
My immune system, instead of being the army that attacks enemies threatening my body (like viruses and bacteria), it turns on itself and starts fight the healthy bits of me instead.
But, unexpectedly, learning to live with this has made my work so much better.
Because I know now that the key to conquering social media comms is to totally reframe what you’re doing through a frame of positivity.
Creativity is about solving and working around problems, focussing on what CAN be done, not dwelling on the barriers.
I know that if I focus on what I can’t do, I’ll get upset, grumpy and feeling like a failure.
‘I wanted to do that thing, but I had to rest, and now I feel disappointed and my work is rubbish’.
The more I feel like that, the harder it is to put energy into being creative once my body has calmed down a bit.
So then the work I CAN do begins to suffer.
I lose that creative swagger, that playfulness, because I feel bad about myself.
Then the work I get out is lifeless, stale and I can’t find time to make it better because I’m catching up on what I missed.
It’s a vicious circle.
I realised that the negative mindset gets me acting like my immune system - attacking myself, instead of looking after me!
You creative comms people may not have a chronic health condition, we all face challenges, frustrations, and setbacks.
We all do work that we think could be MUCH better.
Now my attitude to social media is like my attitude to my body.
Instead of feeling frustrated because things are not perfect and I haven’t done my best work, I examine what I’ve done that’s really good. I think
'Despite it all, look how much I have achieved. I’m keeping on keeping on. Once in a blue moon, I can come up with something pretty darned splendid!’
I focus on what I CAN do.
‘Alright, I don’t have the time or energy to make or commission a Christmas film like I wanted to do - so what CAN I do that will take less time but be just as good?’
‘I’m not able to be as prolific as other talented comms pros, but a few weeks ago someone told me I had helped them through a difficult time.’
So, the moral of this story is - don't give your problems more attention than they deserve!
Be proud of the things you have achieved, no matter how small, and don’t waste time on guilt or regret about what didn’t work or can't work.
You can’t magically change unjust policies, idiot colleagues, and non-existent budgets overnight.
Work around it.
Focus on what you CAN do.
And see how much better you feel and watch your work dramatically improve.
