Concert of Light

Monday 21 December at 8pm via our YouTube channel

Join us online, whether at home or abroad and take a well-earned break from all your Christmas preparations. Sit back, relax and listen to a selection of popular, classical and festive music favourites.
On the Winter Solstice, we invite you to light a candle to reflect on the past year, but most importantly to look ahead with hope to the coming year.
Stay well, stay warm and stay connected with dlr Libraries.

Talks and Videos in December

During the month of December a series of talks and short videos tying in with What’s in a Name? will be made available on dlr’s YouTube channel.
If you missed Séamus Cannon’s excellent talk on Placenames in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, check it out here.
We will be hearing from architectural historian, author/artist and all-round expert on the history of Dún Laoghaire Peter Pearson, as he provides a walking tour of the People’s Park, the East Pier, County Hall and George’s Street. We will also include videos with dlr Heritage Officer Deirdre Black and dlr LexIcon Archivist David Gunning. Enjoy the series!
Keep an eye out for banners up in the town promoting the centenary of the name change and thanks to shop owners and our colleagues in County Hall for installing the colourful postcard images of the town some 100 years or more ago in a variety of show windows.

with Storyteller Helena Byrne via Zoom

The winter evenings are now long & chilly, but never fear! Some heartwarming, some funny, some downright spooky, these stories are sure to brighten even the darkest of evenings. So wrap yourself up with a hot cuppa of choice and enjoy these wonderful winter tales from the comfort of your home.

Happy 6th Birthday dlr LexIcon!

Congratulations to all at dlr LexIcon as they celebrate 6 years since opening on 8 December 2014. In that time, over 3 million of you have visited; to browse the collection, attend an event or exhibition, study for exams or simply to admire the beautiful views throughout. We’re delighted to be open again and to welcome you back. Our thanks to you all.

Design a Postcard Competition

dlr Libraries are delighted to announce a Design a Postcard competition! It’s all part of the What’s in a Name? series of events celebrating the centenary of the name change in 1920 from Kingstown to Dún Laoghaire. This competition is open to all age groups and we have excellent prizes. See full details in link below.
We want you to showcase your favourite spot in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown with a colourful design that would entice people to visit. We've acquired nearly 700 postcards of this area for our Local Studies Collection and we’ve created a book and exhibition to share with you. Now it’s YOUR turn to share your favourite parts of the County with us!
Closing date for this competition is Friday 15 January 2021 and we plan on printing a limited number of the winning entries.
