Dear Parents and Guardians,

Join me in congratulating Erin Harker, our recipient of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese Christ the Teacher Award. Erin Harker is a patient and caring teacher who knows her students well.  She knows which students need extra support and provides that support for them calmly and gently.  At the same time, she also knows which students need extra enrichment, allowing them to work on separate tasks that challenge and motivate them in unique ways.

As the Junior High Math and Religion teacher, she not only pushes her students academically but she also helps prepare them for Confirmation and invites them into a deeper relationship with Christ by including a service-learning component to her classes, teaching stewardship and discipleship to all of Junior High.  She, herself, continually serves others throughout the school, supporting co-workers at all grade levels in any way possible and she is often found delivering gift-bags to office staff or maintenance, simply because she knows it will brighten their day!

She also pushes herself to continually stay up-to-date with best practices in teaching and learning and is fearless when trying new technology, inspiring other teachers to do the same and supporting them in their efforts.  Thank you, Erin, for answering the call to serve Holy Cross School!

Friday we will celebrate our annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass. This day has become a beautiful celebration of Mary and one that is especially meaningful to our Hispanic Families. This year we will only celebrate with a special mass and a brief telling of Our Lady’s miraculous story in each classroom, but hope to continue the tamales feast in the coming years.

Our 8th grade students will plan the Mass and attend with the PK Immersion class. If you have a child in any of those grades, you are welcome to come and celebrate Mass in the church, otherwise you can view the live-stream Mass via Zoom. Please look for the link later in this newsletter.

Have a great week!

Queridos padres y guardianes,

Directora

You’re probably aware that, for the second year in a row, Holy Cross School was voted the Readers’ Choice Best Private School in Michiana. This is a wonderful tribute to the faculty, staff and administration of our school who work so diligently to provide a quality education to our children as well as to our school parents, parishioners and community partners who support the efforts of our school.  It is so fitting that Angie Budzinski’s retirement as principal was capped by this honor and that Annie Borjas’ first year as our new principal begins with the same vote of confidence by the Michiana community.
During this Thanksgiving season, I am so grateful for these two women, for their vision for the school’s future, their professionalism in administrating the school, their trust in God’s hand in our school’s well-being, and their pastoral sensitivity and approach to our students, faculty, parents and issues that face the school. I am also thankful for the level of commitment and dedication that our faculty and staff have exhibited during this time.  Teachers have spent many additional hours offering virtual lessons to students taking classes at home while also teaching their regular classes inside the school building.  Our faculty members are going the extra mile to offer all our onsite and virtual learners the best educational experience possible during this exceptional time. We hope to be able to continue onsite classes for as long as local government considers it safe to do so.
Parishioners who attended Holy Cross School decades or just years ago can be proud of their alma mater.  All parishioners can be proud of the important community outreach that our school provides to our neighborhood, our city and our diocese.  Thank you for your support of our school.
