Holiday Gift Ideas & Event Update

Today we present the final installment of our gift suggestions marathon. 2020 has been a long and difficult year, so today we have Gift Ideas for Happy Reading. (And we also have a newly announced event for readers of both science and science fiction.)

Shop now, and shop independent with us this holiday season—during in-store shopping hours, via curbside pickup, or with our mailout services.

Today is our deadline for placing mailout orders that are expected to arrive by December 25th. Please note that this only applies to items that we have in stock (special orders for out-of-stock items are unlikely to arrive by the holiday at this point) and due to a high volume of orders being processed by our intrepid team of web booksellers, it will take us a few days to process these requests. We are working hard to be speedy! Please review our guidelines and deadlines for holiday shopping, and thank you!

Some Holiday Shopping Tips:

  • Shop our recommended titles! The Holiday Hundred and our Holiday Gift Ideas are recommended titles that we have stocked up on for the holidays. We will do our best to mark individual titles as "unavailable" or "special order" if they sell out, and if restocking from the publisher becomes impossible. We are experiencing shipping delays and out-of-stock titles at publishers.
  • When shopping for books at harvard.com, note that items listed as "Special Order" will not arrive before December 25th.
  • Note that harvard.com lists the "in-stock" status of titles, but that this is not live updating. Items are selling quickly this time of year, and items that appear to be in-stock may not be. We are doing our best to keep things updated, but for this reason strongly recommended shopping our recommended titles, particularly the Holiday Hundred!
  • If the specific title you are looking for is out of stock, check out our recommendations for something else that might hit the spot for your intended recipient!
And as the last days of holiday shopping approach, we are recommending one-size-fits-every-bibliophile gift cards and quick gift bundles.

Thank you for your continued support!

Newly Announced Virtual Event

Katie Mack and Kim Stanley Robinson

Thursday, December 17 at 5:00 PM

Next week we are pleased to welcome renowned theoretical astrophysicist Katie Mack and writer Kim Stanley Robinson—author of the acclaimed, bestselling Mars Trilogy—for a discussion of their latest books, The End of Everything: (Astrophysically Speaking) and The Ministry for the Future: A Novel. This Harvard Science Book Talks event is presented in partnership with the Harvard University Division of Science and the Harvard Library.

While payment is not required, we are suggesting a $3 contribution to support this author series, our staff, and the future of Harvard Book Store—a locally owned, independently run Cambridge institution.

Boyfriend Material

by Alexis Hall

Apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends. Beowulf: A New Translation

by Maria Dahvana Headley

Beowulf may seem like a strange choice for a "light" read, but this new feminist translation uses modern language that brings out how fun and juicy the story is supposed to be.

Becoming Duchess Goldblatt

by Anonymous, Duchess Goldblatt

"First, if you haven't already, get yourself to Twitter and follow @DuchessGoldblat. She is a beacon of goodness and whimsy. A port in the storm. A balm. Becoming Duchess Goldblatt tells the deeply human story behind Duchess's creation, and the community that has grown up around her. When she needed a beacon of goodness and whimsy, a port in the storm, a balm, she became one for us." —Rachel C., Harvard Book Store

The Moment of Tenderness

by Madeleine L'Engle

This powerful collection of short stories traces an emotional arc inspired by Madeleine L'Engle's early life and career, from her lonely childhood in New York to her life as a mother in small-town Connecticut. In a selection of eighteen stories discovered by one of L'Engle's granddaughters, we see how L'Engle's personal experiences and abiding faith informed the creation of her many cherished works.

Sex and Vanity: A Novel

by Kevin Kwan

The new novel by Kevin Kwan (author of Crazy Rich Asians) is a modern retelling of E.M. Forster's A Room with a View that takes us to a luxury wedding on the Isle of Capri and the height of New York City society.

Wow, No Thank You.: Essays

by Samantha Irby

Samantha Irby's essays can cover difficult topics, from aging to money problems to step-parenting (particularly step-parenting as a Black woman in white, small-town America), but she tackles each topic with edgy, relatable humor.
