Illinois Innovation Index: STEM Talent 2020
Presented by Horizon, the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition's 2020 STEM Talent Index looks back at a decade of progress within the state’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) talent pipeline. Findings are mixed. Illinois has established itself as a national leader in computer science, but peer states are catching up. Fields at the intersection of mathematics, computing, and business—including data science—have seen significant growth in Illinois. However, access to education and quality jobs in STEM areas is lacking for many Illinoisans.
  1. Illinois awarded 24,861 STEM bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in 2019—a new record for the state. The share of degrees awarded in STEM areas has grown steadily over the past decade, reaching 19.9 percent in 2019.

  2. STEM jobs in Illinois reached 352,280 in 2019. No state among the top 10 in STEM employment has grown jobs more quickly than Illinois over the past decade—adding more than 90,000 jobs since 2010.

  3. Illinois is a national leader in computing talent, adding more than 26,000 jobs in the area since the start of the decade. However, key computer science degree growth has slowed in recent years. Illinois now ranks 3rd nationally in computer science degree production

  4. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has highlighted the critical need for biomedical & biotechnology innovation. Illinois ranks 7th nationally in biomedical & biotechnology degrees, and 12th in jobs—though jobs are growing more quickly in Illinois than nationally.

  5. Progress to increase equity and inclusion for underrepresented populations in Illinois' STEM pipeline is lacking, especially for women and Black Illinoisans. In fact, the share of STEM degrees awarded to Black students in Illinois fell by 0.4 percent from 2010 to 2019.
