What are you doing over the summer?

Last week of the Wire for 2020

We look forward to hearing new stories form the team next year

Another year has zoomed on by and that does mean that the Wire will be wrapping up production for the summer break from this Friday 11 December.

It isn't easy coordinating, producing and presenting a current affairs program across three different states in the best of times, let alone amidst the throngs of a global pandemic. The team has done an exceptional job at keeping your communities up to date and informed on the issues that matter the most, detailed coverage of the pandemic as it has unfolded both here and overseas, as well as excellent coverage throughout NAIDOC week, International Day of People with A Disability, multiple Royal Commissions, Bushfires, and everything else in between that 2020 has thrown at them.

We will miss the Wire a bunch over the summer months, but we look forward to them joining us fresh faced and roaring to go in 2021! In the mean time, you can find programming of a similar vein in its place until the team returns, such as the National Features and Documentary series, City Road, Think Business Futures, Another World and a whole bunch more.

Not already taking the Wire? Get in touch with us here at the Community Radio Network to find out more about our sector's flagship current affairs program!

Important Dates to be across

For National Radio News over the summer

Just a reminder that as we come towards the Christmas and New Year break,  we will be having some changes to the National Radio News delivery over that time.
This happens every year and we keep disruption to a minimum  to give you continuity of programming.
National Radio News will stay the same except for these changes:
  • Christmas Day 25/12/2020 – AM Bulletin only (NO PM BULLETINS) and NO daily State bulletin
  • Boxing Day 26/12/2020 – Saturday format as usual
  • New Years Day 01/01/2021 – AM & PM Bulletins as normal and NO daily State bulletin
For regular users of the daily State-based bulletins, they will be on hiatus from Christmas Day until their return on Monday January 4th 2021.

Tis the season to be jolly!

Look out for this Christmas special coming up for Dads on the Air

‘Tis the season to be jolly! And coming up next week for Dad's On The Air is a festive feast for your ears! One of Australia’s favourite storytellers is back with a collection of stories about everyone’s favourite family holiday. It’s the holiday where shopping centres become a sea of dazed shoppers bearing checklists as long as your arm, lunch is a never-ending buffet of prawns and ham and your electricity bill is doubly struck by having to run the fan all day and keep those decorative lights blinking through the night.

William McInnes tackles the silly season in a way only he can - telling stories brimming with good humour and nostalgia, and talks to Dads on the Air host Bill Kable and hopes to remind us what Christmas and the holidays are all about.

Dads on the Air
  • 27'50
  • Thursdays from 09:04 AEDT
  • Available via satellite, DDN capture and download.

Congratulating Paula Langlands

and her incredible contributions to jazz and community radio

At the Eastside Radio AGM recently the station celebrated their longest serving broadcaster, who began broadcasting in 1995, who has just happened to be presenting and producing one of the Community Radio Network's longest running programs, Jazz Made In Australia. We are of course talking about none other than the incomparable Paula Langlands.

Paula has not only made an incredible music program here on the network and on Eastside radio for over twenty years, but Paula's love and support of Australian jazz makes her program pivotal to the jazz scene, as well as offering a place for future jazz artists to be heard. She has also demonstrated the importance of Australian music programming by being an advocate to jazz musicians across the country, no matter their nuance, instrument or style.

All of us here at the Community Radio Network were very saddened to hear that Paula will be stepping back from presenting at Eastside Radio and on Jazz Made In Australia. But we are so incredibly grateful for her continued support of Australian Jazz, and for supplying her program to us for so long. At the AGM she was awarded Eastside Radio's Star Award, the second ever given in the station’s history which just goes to show the lasting legacy and impact she has made to the station, her wider community, and to all stations taking her program. We want to join Eastside in congratulating Paula for everything that she has done for her station, and for all of us who have tuned in over the years.

Jazz Made In Australia will still continue on the Community Radio Network with Paula's friend and fellow presenter at Eastside Phil, continuing the program.

You can read about Paula's Star Award on Eastside's Facebook page here.

Our best picks over the last week

Primary Perspectives
Tuesdays 16:04 AEDT
Girls to the front is what we say, and it's what the crew at Primary Perspectives was saying this week too! They showcased women in trade, tech and IT and talked to professional women in these fields to demonstrate how all careers should be free of gender constraints and stereotypes.
Primary perspectives is radio created by kids, for kids. Coming to us from the School Broadcasting Network you can expect an hour's worth of serious edu-tainment each week, dedicated to the younger ones.
Checkpoint
Tuesdays 19:04 AEDT
Did you notice something a little different about the way Checkpoint was sounding this week? Well, we did - as they were back live in the studio! Just in time to talk about all the new consoles and end of year gaming releases, we're so glad our Melbourne based friends are back creating live radio - well done team!
Checkpoint comes from JOY 94.9 - Australia's only LGBTQIA+ radio station, and talks all things games and gaming news from a uniquely queer perspective, and gives a 1-Up to diversity in gaming!
