Rolling Airport Closures
12 Dec 2020- 1 Feb 2021

AFIS will be off watch at irregular times between 12 December and 1 February due to staffing issues. While the airspace above the airfield will remain open, Kāpiti Airport will be NOTAMed closed.

The Aero Club is again making contingency arrangements to allow for as much flying as possible including:
  • Opening booking slots earlier and later in the day. We are also blocking booking slots during the airport closures until 28 Dec 2020. If you require an aeroplane at these times for cross-country flying, please contact us directly to book.
  • Staff will remain on the ground during normal business hours to provide ground training. If you are preparing for your next ASPEQ exam, this is a great time to book a slot with us.
  • Existing bookings have been optimised to avoid gaps between flights. (please double check your existing bookings as they might have been shifted to accommodate this optimisation)
  • We have made every effort to shift bookings instead of cancelling them outright, if you have a cancelled booking please go to PaperAviator to rebook.
  • We aim to position aircraft at neighbouring airports to permit training to continue during these closures. Once we have confirmed these arrangements, we'll send a separate email with more details.

Thank you for your continued understanding and support, if you need any help adjusting your flights do not hesitate to call us at the Club or contacting your instructor directly.

Tony's Weekend Weather

There’ll be a southwesterly flow over the country this weekend, with a front moving NE across central NZ Saturday morning then dissipating as it moves further north. Rain in Westland/Buller will clear during the day and move onto Taranaki-Manawatū. Apart from in the far south, the east coasts of both islands should be fine.

There should be good flying weather pretty much everywhere on Sunday.

There may be a few showers in the Kāpiti areas, and especially the Tararuas, as the front passes through Saturday morning, but it’ll be a mostly fine day, with northwesterlies around 15kts.  Sunday should also be fine, with winds mainly from the west or south, about 15kts.

Safety Message

Safety in the circuit is everyone's responsibility. This season's Vector Magazine by CAA has a great article on the considerations of operating in this high-risk area.

Click on the link above to read the entire article. On our end, we recommend you keep it simple:
  • Keep a good mental picture of where everyone is in the circuit and any joining aircraft
  • Familiarise yourself with the IFR arrivals for your destination airfield before you take-off so you know where to look for IFR traffic
  • If you don't know the position of IFR traffic, ask the pilot to give you an updated ETA
  • If things get too busy for the circuit, you can always vacate the circuit and orbit well away from the airfield. Make sure to remember to make a radio call stating your intentions so other pilots know what you are doing.

How are we doing?

As part of our future plans for the clubs website and various marketing platforms we are looking for you, our valued club members, to write a review or leave a thumbs up. We need your help to spread the word about the clubs facilities and culture in order to help promote our services. It would be greatly appreciated if you could spare a few minutes of your time and head over to Facebook and/or Google and leave a review.
