Friday 11th December

How is Tier 2 going for you? And more importantly, did you spot a Bambi or two at the launch of Light Up Leytonstone? Illuminations aside, this week we recommend checking out the latest pop-up at Leyton's Host, the mighty new Truman's Social Club in E17, and a brand new destination straight across the Olympic Park: find out below why Hackney Bridge is perfect for more than a weekend coffee and a mooch.
1. Leyton Midland's festive pop-ups

Look at this wonderfully Christmassy scene down at Host and Perky Blenders by Leyton Midland Overground last weekend. Next up (starting today) is an interiors yard sale curated by Naomi Smart, British Vogue's Shopping Director, which continues tomorrow, Saturday 12th, and Sunday 13th December. Expect unusual 20th century pieces, from furniture and lamps to glassware and ceramics. Usual shop opening times apply. And better still, afterwards grab a pint at Gravity Well Taproom, which is back open right opposite: 'substantial meals' to soak up the booze are from ace plant-based SpiceBox (read our review here) and Chickenish.
2. Oh deer...

Last Saturday's Leytonstone Light Up launch was surprisingly magical, especially after a festive lunch at the Holly Tree and a hearty walk over Wanstead Flats. St John's Church is beautifully lit like a film set, as is the library opposite, while local artists' Greenaway & Greenaway deer projections - yep, there she is, bottom left - were cute enough to send the dozens of toddlers absolutely wild (disclaimer: some adults were mesmerised too). The light installations happen all over again tomorrow, Saturday 12th, for the last time - worth catching if you missed it. More details here.
3. This week's sponsor: Join Hackney Bridge's creative community

If you’ve taken a winter wander down the River Lea recently, you will undoubtedly have spotted Hackney Bridge nestled on the canalside edge of the Olympic Park. A unique combo of workspace and studios from the team behind Peckham Levels, it houses local artists, makers and other small businesses, from local fashion brands and music producers to vintage clothing store Get Up Yesterday and spanking new coffee destination The Roasting Shed. And there are a few spaces left if you want to join its diverse mix of creatives. Read more about Hackney Bridge, what you can visit, and how you can get involved, here.
Don't forget Masala India for its BYO policy, warming tiffins and the rather magical heated garden. Read our 5 top tips on the best dishes to order here.
4. Gasp at Truman Social Club

While we 100% heart our very own petite E10 and E11 taproom bars – whether it’s Gravity Well or Solvay – the jumbo E17 ones make a nice change. And the latest big hitter on the Blackhorse Road beer mile is the original East London brand, Truman. And it really is absolutely bleedin' huuuuge. Find out why you have to pay a visit here.

5. The best new plant-based restaurant in East London?

Whether you're vegan or not, this is one of those places that we reckon is a proper one-off. Site London opened opposite just before lockdown and serves next-level plant-based dishes with zero fuss (and an amazing cocktaill and vegan wine list too). Find out what we enjoyed just before the last lockdown here
