Dear RGHS Families

The end of a very eventful year has at last arrived.  I wish every one of our Rustenburg families a healthy and happy festive season.  To all who celebrate Christmas may it be a meaningful time for you and your family.  For those who have suffered loss over this year, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

We bid farewell to four members of staff at the end of this year:

Philipa Colly - started in 2015

It is with sadness that we bid Ms Colly farewell as she takes on a new, exciting challenge.  She has been a colourful and well-loved part of our Maths Department since 2015 and has inspired many with her teaching and the relationships she has built.  Having what must be one of the neatest and most colour-coordinated classrooms and being super organised are some of the things I will always remember about her.  Ms Colly, I wish you well in your future endeavours and we hope that you’ll pop in every now and then.

Denise Campbell - started in 2016

Officially Ms Campbell is retiring at the end of this year, but will be staying on to do maternity cover for Ms de Klerk during Term 1 of 2021.  She has been with us since 2016 and will be sorely missed by staff and learners.  Her quiet and authoritative manner makes her someone who is easy to talk to and to confide in and many staff and learners have found words of comfort and wisdom in her over the years.  We wish her well as she retires and know that she will find much with which to keep herself busy. I’m sure she will not miss all the marking that goes with being an English teacher.

Cedric van Dyk - started in 2004

I know that this year has to be the worst one ever to be retiring from a role that you love and are exceptionally good at.  It has been especially so for Mr van Dyk who really enjoys the time he spends in his classroom.  Not only has the school been the place where he could share his passion for justice, equality and history, but for many years it was also his home.  Mr van Dyk will leave a legacy of colourful shirts, a readiness to help those in need, vibrant teaching, loud music and skillfully-worded debates.  I wish him well in his new adventures.  There is no doubt there is a book in him somewhere.

Biddy Ryan - started in 1986

Ms Ryan has been one of the longest-serving members of staff that Rustenburg has ever had.  Not only was she a learner at Rustenburg from Grade 1 to Matric, but she has taught here since 1986 (my first year of university!).  Ms Ryan has decided to take early retirement so that she can spend more time with her family who is very precious to her.  As an aunt to four nieces, three great nieces and a nephew, she will be kept very busy.  Along with her daily floral instagram posts, crocheting in staff meetings, and ever readiness with interesting stories, she has shown an immense compassion for learners in her care.  Considering her weekly habit of cold water swimming at Dalebrook and her love of hiking, she might live to be 150.  I wish Ms Ryan well and trust that we will see her popping in for a chat every now and then.

We also bid a fond farewell to our Matric class of 2020. We look forward to seeing you on the results day at the end of February 2021.

I look forward to welcoming our Grade 8 to 11 families back in 2021 and sincerely hope we are able to get back to some form of maskless existence.

Ms Tame, Ms Norval and Ms Bassardien presented a careers talk for Grades 8 and 9 last week. The talk focused on their experiences of their tertiary studies.
We would like to acknowledge Grade 12 learner, Elizabeth Wucherpfennig, as the artist of the creative piece pictured above. Unfortunately this work was incorrectly accredited in the 2020 School Magazine. We apologise for this error and congratulate Elizabeth on this powerful design.

Events

Following concerns raised by current and past learners earlier this year, the school appointed L&N Consultants to work with us on matters of improving racial literacy, addressing issues of systemic racism and moving toward a more diverse and inclusive school. During 2020, she has led multiple workshops for Rustenburg staff and smaller coaching circles for members of the leadership team. As part of this process, she and her team will be facilitating workshops with the learners at the start of 2021 and will be offering an opportunity for parents to hear some of what is being unpacked in these sessions.
