“The magic of painting is to let the observer complete the painting, so not giving all the answers. The painting should still ask questions.” - David Stern

I am thrilled to share an insightful documentary film on painter David Stern. In creating this film, we wanted to bring to light Stern’s artistic practice, take you on a behind the scenes tour of his studio, and share the artist’s overall philosophy on painting, history and life.
David Stern is a German-born, NY-based artist, whose artistic practice consistently explores the human condition, the metaphysical, psychological and physical state of being. His paintings serve as his personal reflections on the overall state of our existence, seeking clarity of meaning in the only moment we ever know, the Now. In his characteristic style of powerful figurative compositions created with vibrant acrylic brushstrokes, the figurative and the abstract structures create an intense ambiguity and the works carry an abundant tension with drips of acrylic paint splicing and gesturing to distort the space they occupy.
The artist’s ongoing ”At the Gates” series considers gateways and what lies beyond these metaphysical thresholds. It explores Stern’s fascination with the movement between and beyond thresholds—both physical and metaphysical—the moment of change from one quality to the next. As Stern says, “The physical reality derives from our metaphysical concepts of thresholds, the red line, the moment we live in, as opposed to the unknown future.”
The lines between figuration, abstraction and expressionism blur in Stern’s work. The works center on contemporary narratives conveyed through expressive brushstrokes, abstracting the philosophical and subjective nature of the reality they’re meant to depict.
In Stern’s own words: “Reality is always challenging for an artist, the process of observing a flower and transcending the very core of its being in a painting, is ultimately the same as observing complex societal currents, crystallizing them into forming an image”.
Enjoy viewing the film!
