What do trees have to offer in a year shaped by a global pandemic, climate change and a movement for racial justice? More than you might think.
Trees are a powerful tool to help Boston residents remain healthy and connected. Since our founding in 2018, we have stood shoulder to shoulder with all residents of Boston to build a healthier, more just, and equitable city.
Too often, tree canopy health tracks along race and income (you can see this on our TreeEquity map.) This means tree canopy is often thinnest in communities of color and low income, which studies have shown are the most vulnerable to effects of the global pandemic and climate change. With fewer trees, air is dirtier, summer days are hotter, and connections among neighbors are more frayed.
In these physically distant and socially challenging times, Speak for the Trees is living up to our name. We helped protect 125 mature trees from removal along Melnea Cass Blvd., organized tree giveaways in East Boston and Hyde Park, and employed 15 high-school students from racially and socially diverse backgrounds to help us celebrate our community forests.
Now, more than ever, is the time to celebrate trees. The benefits trees provide nurture our physical, social and emotional well-being. In caring for trees, we’re caring for one another.
Sincerely,
Taurean Green, Esq.
