I was reading through the life of Joseph this week. I think it’s one of my favorite stories in the Bible. You know the story at the end, the people of Israel are saved because of Joseph and all come and live in the land of Goshen. The book of Genesis ends on a happy note. The book of Exodus however tells us of a time of great tribulation for the Israelites. 400 years the Israelites spent as slaves to the people of Egypt. What caught my attention this time was why did God send them to Egypt in the first place? There was probably a worldwide famine, it was so bad, people from all over the world came to Egypt for grain. God used Joseph to save His people, but why use Egypt to save them?
But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites. Exodus 1:12
God not only kept the Israelites alive, but they grew in number and strength. When Moses took his people out of Egypt, they left with all the wealth of land. I can’t imagine living as slaves for generations. I imagine it was a difficult life indeed, but difficulty didn’t stop them from growing. Israel despite all the challenges grew greater during oppression. 2020 was hard, one of the more challenging years for our world. I don’t understand why life goes the way it goes, but I do understand that God uses difficult times to grow His people. I don’t think the people of Israel ever had an “easy” time. From the battles in Canaan to the captivity of Babylon, life was always hard. For all the challenges, God always found a way to protect His people, and advance His plan. God has never promised His people an easy road, but He has promised that we don’t have to travel that road alone. This world seems to be out of control, but I believe out of chaos God will save His people. The Bible says at the end of time His people will have “patience”, let us endure this present trial, for our great reward is soon to be ours. May God bless you in all your trials and difficulties, God has not left you alone.
