Keeping in touch

Hello! Welcome to the first issue of RMAC’s digital newsletters. My purpose in establishing this new format is to stay in touch with you, our friends and supporters, on a more regular basis. We will be sending you an email once a month to connect you with behind-the-scenes projects, new exhibitions and collection news, as well as events, classes and other happenings whether virtual or (eventually) in-person. Our printed newsletter, the Museum Magazine, is currently on pause during the pandemic until we have the ability to plan a bit further out. Once we can resume publication, we will continue with this online version to supplement our print materials.

2020 has been unprecedented for the world. Our story of perseverance, change and adaptation is one among millions. What hasn’t changed is the hard work of the RMAC staff and the dedication of our members. We've continued to provide programming, exhibitions and collections care on behalf of our community. We thank you for your support, your kind words and your patience as we look toward a return to a safe and healthy community.

Be well,

CAROLINE BROOKS

Executive Director

Reopening Status

We’re open (again)!

RMAC reopened on Friday, December 4 after a 3-week closure. We will continue to operate at 25% capacity while enacting enhanced safety measures, which include reduced hours to allow for additional cleaning. We also require all guests to wear face coverings and observe social distancing guidelines. Our current hours are Tuesday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. In order to allow space for ample social distancing, we encourage you to make an appointment to visit by calling us at 575-624-6744. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows.

Membership Week

Help us expand our museum community

We are launching Membership Week December 14-18. This is a great opportunity to encourage friends and family to purchase a museum membership. Current members might also consider purchasing gift memberships to give during the holidays. A new series of videos, featuring some of our current members, will be released this week on social media and will also be available on YouTube.

And to our current members – thank you! Stop in Tuesday-Friday, December 15-18 for a small locally handmade gift, daily prize drawings and to shop in the Museum Store. Members receive a 20% discount in the store throughout the month of December.

This week will also be your last chance to see the fabulous and engaging Roswell Artist-in Residence exhibitions featuring Tonee Harbert, Agustín Lucho Pozo Gálvez, and Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado.

Puzzle Room

Counter the COVID blues – make your reservation!

Do you like crossword or logic puzzles? Are you looking for an inexpensive small-group activity to enjoy during the holidays? We’ve temporarily converted one of our galleries into a Puzzle Room. It’s a modified version of an Escape Room with low to no contact. A fictional storyline, inspired by works from the collection, asks you to solve a series of puzzles and figure out the “RAiR Secret” in 60 minutes.

Cost is $5 per person to help support our operations. The activity is geared for 3 to 5 players, ages 16 and up. Call for further details or to place a reservation at 575-624-6744. Reservations during open hours are preferred, but alternative times may be available upon request.

New Admission Fees

Looking toward a more secure future and better visitor experience

Starting in January, we will be charging admission fees to visit the exhibition galleries for the first time in our 84-year history. While this will be a significant change, we need to consider a different funding model due to city budget cutbacks. An entrance fee will provide us with more financial stability, while allowing us to sustain accessible, high-quality cultural experiences for all.

Members will receive free admission (along with free general admission to the planetarium when it reopens), and we will also provide guest passes to members for friends and family. To help ensure we remain accessible, RMAC has joined a national program called Museums for All. As a member, RMAC pledges to offer a reduced admission of $3.00 to individuals and families in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help encourage individuals of all backgrounds to visit regularly and build lifelong museum habits.

Discounts will also be available for Roswell residents, students, military members and seniors, along with free days for seniors and residents. Admission for children ages 15 and under will be free.

Exhibitions

New exhibitions coming in January

Indigenous American Art, 1960-2000 showcases Indigenous artists whose work blends contemporary art sensibilities with traditional cultural elements.
Animals! presents the diversity of the natural world in a lighthearted exhibit for the whole family. Both open January 15 and are drawn from RMAC’s collection.
Roswell Artist-in-Residence Justin Richel explores the art and artifice inherent in the medium of painting through the combined practice of sculpture and painting. Richel received a BFA from Maine College of Art and later studied the technique of icon painting at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk, Maine. His work is held in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art (ME), the John Michael Kohler Art Center (WI) and Fidelity Investments (MA), and he has exhibited at several institutions, primarily in the Northeast. Justin Richel: A Window, A Door, A Ladder opens January 8.
