- Award Management Update: The new Worktribe system to replace the fEC project costing tool now well underway. A demo system is expected to be available end of February.
- ***REMINDER*** MRC Experimental Medicine Grants: These grants will produce new mechanistic insights, identifying opportunities to modify disease pathways and enabling novel therapeutic or diagnostic approaches for future development. - Internal Global Challenges Ad Hoc scheme 2020/21: This scheme is open for applications which will develop equitable research partnerships with colleagues in Lower and Middle Income Countries. All activities and expenditure must take place before 31st July 2021. The application form and scheme guidance and FAQS are available on our Global Challenges SharePoint site. Researchers considering applying to this scheme may find it helpful to refer our ODA toolkit. Please contact the Research Development (International) team if you have any queries about this scheme. - Internal Funding Call Notification: QR GCRF Research Workshops: This call aims to support Bristol researchers and their overseas partners run workshops which focus on tackling development challenges and have the potential to create impact in Lower and Middle Income countries (LMIC). Applicants can run either a physical or an online workshop, but contingency plans must be in place should restrictions due to the response to COVID-19 prevent physical workshops taking place. - Cancer Grand Challenges: Welcoming applications to address one of the challenges (see the list below) from teams working across a breadth of disciplines and institutions including but not limited to: the biomedical sciences, software development and technology, engineering and physical sciences, behavioural, health, population and social sciences. Internal Deadline: Anyone wishing to take part in a Cancer Grand Challenge team must express their interest to their Head of School, their finance contact, and Zoe Holland (zoe.holland@bristol.ac.uk), as early as possible and at the latest 2 months prior to the deadline (i.e. 22 Feb 2021)
- NBIC Fourth POC Funding Call: projects that establish the feasibility of a concept, idea or technology from any application sector, which is aimed at preventing, detecting, managing or engineering biofilms. These projects should be collaborative between a research institution and commercial partner (or other customer stakeholder). Full details of this funding call can be found on NBIC’s POC funding webpage, which also includes eligibility details, FAQ’s, Intellectual Property and finance guidelines. Deadline: 23:59pm 2 February 2021
- GCRF UKRI-JST-DOST research collaborations in south east Asia: Proposals are invited which will connect currently or recently (within the last 3 years) active projects focused on south east Asia. For the purposes of this call, eligible countries of south east Asia are Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. - NBIC 4th Proof of Concept Call: call for collaborative proposals for Proof of Concept (POC) projects from NBIC partners who have the experience and knowledge necessary to investigate and exploit areas in which biofilms play a central part. Contact nbic@biofilms.ac.uk if you have any questions. The application portal will open no later than 04/01/2021 and close at 23:59pm on 12 February 2021.
- Leverhulme Trust Research Centres 2021: The Leverhulme Trust has now released the details of the Outline application process to its 2021 Research Centre competition. As only one application per HEI is allowed, a major bid process is now in place. At the earliest opportunity: Express an interest (email research-development@bristol.ac.uk). The internal application form should include: The five-page description of the proposed Centre's research activity as per Leverhulme’s guidelines (see ‘How to apply’); A list of institutional contributions requested; A confirmation of support from all PI's and Co-Is’ Deans (please paste in a copy of the Dean’s email after the five page description); Internal deadline for applications (email research-development@bristol.ac.uk) at 1pm, 18 January 2021.
- Health Systems Research Initiative (HSRI) Call 8 Research Grant – outline stage: This call welcomes multidisciplinary, collaborative and multi-country/multi-site applications that address a clearly defined challenge faced by health systems. The purpose of this scheme is to provide funding for the best proposals to generate new knowledge to strengthen and improve health systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Deadline for outline applications is 19 January 2021.
- Open Research Prize: The Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Phil Taylor, has announced the launch of an Open Research Prize, open to all researchers at all career stages and across all disciplines at the University of Bristol. The deadline for submissions if 5 pm on Friday 29 January 2021.
- Spring 2021 UHBW Research Capability Funding and Above and Beyond grants now open: Please find the application form and further guidance. - Early deadlines: ERC Starting and Consolidator Grant schemes: Assuming access to the ERC is maintained, ERC Starting and Consolidator grant schemes are likely to be amongst the first deadlines under Horizon Europe. If you are interested in applying to either scheme, please contact the EU Research Team Mailbox at eu-research@bristol.ac.uk so that we can keep you updated with the latest developments and guide you through the UoB process. - Fund for International Collaboration Wave 2 Calls. Various current and expected funding calls for collaborative research. If interested email rd-international@bristol.ac.uk. Various deadlines.
- Bristol International Online Research Collaboration Awards launched: The scheme has been developed to help support international collaborations without the in-person visit normally associated with IRP awards. A range of collaborative activities can be funded through this scheme, which can also support operational costs such as event support and facilitation, translation and/or transcription services. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling monthly basis. Get in touch with irp-admin@bristol.ac.uk for any queries.
- UKRI Innovation Scholars Secondments: UKRI invites applications for individuals wishing to spend up to 36 months (full or part time) on secondment. We aim to: create porosity between sectors by enabling career mobility. boost the skills, knowledge and career development of people, intensify knowledge exchange between the biomedical industry and academia, add value to the Biomedical Sciences sector and the UK economy by increasing productivity. - ***ECR*** Bristol Collegiate Research Society Scholarships: An award of up to £500 towards the costs of participating in conferences or symposia, whether the event is 'in person' or online. The scholarship can cover the costs for presenting at online an conference and that no amount is too small. Find out more on the BDC site. - NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships in Dentistry 2021: The NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) is a clinical specialty training post in dentistry that incorporates academic training. The NIHR has allocated funding for 23 ACFs for recruitment in 2021/22, through the Integrated Academic Training (IAT) Programme. As an NIHR ACF you will have access to Masters-level research training to develop academic skills and spend 25% of your time in research or educationalist training. The NIHR ACF is a 3 year fellowship with a flexible entry level tailored to the career stage of the applicant.
- NIHR Clinical Lectureships in Dentistry 2021: The NIHR Clinical Lectureship (CL) is a postdoctoral award that provides a clinical and academic training environment for dentists to establish themselves as independent researchers and leaders. The NIHR has allocated funding for 11 CLs for recruitment in 2021/22, through the Integrated Academic Training (IAT) Programme. As an NIHR CL you will spend 50% of your time in research or educationalist training.
- GW4WARD Technical Staff Development and Funding Scheme: GW4WARD is an initiative designed to drive forward the professional development of our technical staff across GW4. Apply for funding and guidance to become members of professional bodies and learned societies. Apply for the travel bursary scheme to visit other GW4 institutions to develop networks, gain experience and develop skills. Technical staff can also collaborate and share best practice through a series of webinar discussions featuring external speakers. - Bristol Biobank Bristol Biobank stores samples collected from patients and healthy volunteers for use in biomedical research. Collecting a wide range of samples will provide a platform for research into complex conditions. Use, deposit and store samples. Researchers in Bristol and beyond can apply to use samples in their research or to deposit and store samples. Donate samples If you are undergoing hospital care, you may be asked if you would like to make a donation. We also take donations from healthy volunteers. Find out more about donating. Licence and ethics approval The Bristol Biobank is licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (licence number 12512) to store human tissue for research. It has ethics approval from Wales Research Ethics Committee 3 as a research tissue bank to collect and issue biomaterials for biomedical research across a range of therapeutic areas.
