END-OF-YEAR MESSAGE

This year with its unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic is almost history. On behalf of the MPO I would like to wish each and everyone in this wonderful industry of ours a blessed and joyful festive season.
Whatever 2021 holds in store for us, every milk producer can be assured that the MPO is ready to be with them every step of the way.

JAAREINDE-BOODSKAP

AGRIBUSINESS CONFIDENCE AT HIGHEST LEVEL IN SIX YEARS

Following a notable recovery to 51 points in the third quarter of 2020 (3rdQ20), the Agbiz/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index rallied to 61 in the fourth quarter, which is its highest level since the third quarter of 2014. A level above the neutral 50-point mark implies that agribusinesses are optimistic about business conditions in South Africa. The fourth quarter improvement likely reflects two important factors. Firstly, various high-frequency data show that most of South Africa’s agriculture and agribusiness sectors performed relatively well in a year of unusually elevated uncertainty with minimal impact, at an aggregate level, from the COVID-19 crisis and related lockdown restrictions. Secondly, there is strong optimism about the 2020/21 production season on the back of expected higher rainfall across most regions of the country. This fourth quarter survey was conducted between 11 and 20 November and covers agribusinesses operating in all agricultural subsectors across South Africa. Press release. To read more, click

AGRICULTURE’S THIRD QUARTER GDP OUTCOMES STILL IMPRESSIVE

South Africa’s agriculture GDP was still impressive in the 3rdQ20 at 18,5% quarter-on-quarter (q/q), seasonally adjusted annualised with a 0,6% contribution, according to Statistics South Africa.

Again, field and horticulture crops, as well as animal products performed strongly in contributing to agricultural growth. A combination of strong exports, higher commodity prices, and the huge summer crop harvest boosted revenues in the subsector. For example, total maize exports increased by 235% to 963,441 tonnes in the 3rdQ20, relative to the same period in 2019. So far, 1,78 million tonnes have already been shipped for the current marketing season (May 2020 to April 2021), which is 159% higher year-on-year. Press release. To read more, click

LOCUST OUTBREAKS IN THREE OF SA PROVINCES

Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, announced on 3 December 2020 that there were locust outbreaks in three of South Africa’s provinces: the Free State, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape. In a statement, the department said that “control measures are currently being implemented to curb the spread of the locusts and strong winds are aiding the flight and spread of the locusts.” Producers are urged to alert the department if they notice locusts in their area.
