Nancy Harrow is a discovery for us at 2xHD and we are proud to offer it to you. Here’s an excerpt from The San Francisco Examiner:
“How refreshing it is to have a singer who: (a) sings for the tune’s sake rather than her own amazement; (b) doesn’t belt, shout or whine through her nose; (c) doesn’t imitate Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday; (d) avoids cute or contrived mannerisms; (f) carries on the art of jazz singing in the delicate tradition of Mildred Bailey and Lee Wiley; (g) sings like Nancy Harrow.”

Here she sings some of the favorite jazz standards with Billy Hart (drums), Jack Wilkins (guitar), and Rufus Reid (bass).

“The development of the moving picture revolutionised theatre and visual thinking. Similarly, the evolution of film music is a crucial element of 20th century music history. Obviously the role of music was significantly determined by the technical possibilities from the age of silent movies throughout the gradual development of sound films.
Today, film is by all means the most popular and easily comprehensible cultural product accessible by the largest number of people. Consequently, film music also enjoys a popularity that compares only to that of popular music these days. For us „serious” musicians, the recognition that film music indeed claims a place in regular classical concert life was immensely important. Most of all because the best movie soundtracks are definitely rooted in the genre of Romantic symphonic poem.

Music from the hey-day of Hollywood – by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner or Bernard Hermann – or the most significant masters of our days, like Ennio Morricone or John Williams both in their musical contents and elaboration are absolutely comparable to the compositions of Wagner’s and Richard Strauss’s period.”

The tradition of dance in church can be traced back to biblical accounts that King David danced before the tabernacle and promised to play and dance before the Lord. In the Middle Ages church dances were widespread in Europe.

Despite attempts to put an end to this tradition, it was so resilient that elements of church dance can still be found today. In the 13th century the genre was at its height and manuscripts from that period contain large numbers of dances, mostly composed by authors of the Notre Dame school.

The Ensemble Labyrinthus presents musical pieces of 12th and 14th centuries directly linked to various church dances.

Philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) described the encounter between the organised philosophical world of the ancient Greek and the mystical, abstruse world of the East as a dark fire. This would have caused the enlightenment in Greek poetry. It’s unclear what Heidegger really thought about it, but I found the mental image of a dark fire lit by this chance meeting beautiful and highly inspiring. For Heidegger, this was mainly about the East and West, but to me it’s about an encounter with the realms of other people’s experience, principally those of musicians. When two energies meet for the first time and are fully open to the experience, a new mirror image of themselves they have never seen before will arise.

On this release, cellist Joachim Eijlander is joined by Kadir Sonuk (duduk), Izhar Elias (guitar), Helena Basilova (piano) and Vincent van Amsterdam (accordion).

‘The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them.’ This quote, attributed to Claude Debussy, got them thinking. What could that phrase mean, violinist Pieter van Loenen and pianist Tobias Borsboom wondered. Through music of Stravinsky, Poulenc, Takemitsu, Schwertsik and of course Debussy the duo explores in this album the different possible interpretations of ‘the silence between’: The place where the music resides.

The flow of both sisters’ playing demonstrates such a convincing degree of togetherness that it is impossible to hear who is in the lead, notwithstanding the excellent Multichannel recording. Both grands sound warm and Grand.
