This past year — while certainly challenging — has also been our most successful. We’re publishing more than ever and we want to keep doing more to meet demand. In these times, access to sustainable funding in journalism is critical.
Our approach to journalism is collaborative to its core. We work effectively with journalists and media outlets from around the world. We challenge the status quo in international reporting, abandoning the idea of parachute journalism for more in-depth, nuanced coverage of stories that are rooted in local communities, but have global implications. This approach exposes flaws in how we’ve done things in the past and gives us the freedom to experiment with new solutions. And it enables us to both teach and learn from the next generation.
The most impactful stories are the ones we tell together
We have been at the forefront of developing a new form of reporting that we call empowerment journalism.
GRC’s latest feature is emblematic of this approach: Turning Points is a documentary short-series about alcohol use, addiction, resilience and healing in Yellowknife, NWT. It was produced in collaboration with local Indigenous storytellers and the Global Reporting Centre, and aired in partnership with PBS NewsHour. By sharing editorial control with the featured storytellers, Turning Points aimed to alter the typical journalist-subject power dynamic. Participants not only chose what they spoke about, but also assisted with aspects of production like selecting locations and editing the final pieces. They were the writers and directors of their own films.
