Autumnal Doginess Decends

The evenings walk with our best mates is getting darker by the day, and daylight saving isn't going to save us.

As the opportunity for engaging with our dog diminishes, remember there is no such thing as bad weather for outdoor activities, only the wrong clothes. There is much to enjoy about autumn, the light, the falling leaves and the cooler temperatures, more regular rain and the smell of a wet pooch. OK, OK... not so much of the wet pooch!  But it certainly is good to arrive home and have a handy old towel to give your dog a great ol rub down, they will appreciate coming home all the more.

(Don't forget, city dwellers have that special deal at your local Animates, you can always give them a shampoo and blow dry 'any time they are open', and for a whole year, for less than ten beers or twenty flat whites. Don't forget to tell them who recommended you)

Disappointed to see Christchurch's Dog friendliness missed out in the NZ Herald's latest accommodation  'travelogue'... but is sure gives us some canine friendly travel options

These Doggie Temperature Facts
  • Dogs are more sensitive to high temperatures than humans because they rely on breathing out hot air and breathing in cold air to regulate their body temperature. If the air is hot, particularly if it’s close to body temperature, they overheat.

  • Short dogs and dogs with squat faces have an ever-harder time than other dogs regulating their body temperature. They overheat faster in hot weather, enclosed spaces, or during vigorous exercise.

  • Dogs sweat only through their noses and the pads of their feet. Having such a limited area to sweat from also contributes to rapid overheating and potentially fatal heat strokes in hot or humid weather.

Burial dogsGraves of nearly 600 cats and dogs in ancient Egypt may be world’s oldest pet cemetery The cats and dogs lie as if asleep, in individual graves. Many wore collars or other adornments, and they had been cared for through injury and old age, like today’s pets.

Arctic dog sleds

Dogs in the Arctic.  Part of the exhibit looks at the dogs of the Arctic, which have been more than companions to the people who live there. One fascinating thing that sticks out is how dog sledding varies according to the route.  You can take a video tour instead.

Quotes
It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. The rich colours of grass and earth were intensified by the mellow light of a sun almost warm enough for spring…
-- P. D. James, *A Taste for Death*

Gardening is not outcome-oriented. A successful harvest is not the end of a gardener's existence, but only a phase of it. As any gardener knows, the vitality of a garden does not end with a harvest. It simply takes another form. Gardens do not "die" in the winter but quietly prepare for another season.
-- James Carse, *Finite and Infinite Games*

And a poem, "Song for Autumn," by the great Mary Oliver:

........In the deep fall
........don't you imagine the leaves think how
........comfortable it will be to touch
........the earth instead of the
........nothingness of air and the endless
........freshets of wind? And don't you think
........the trees themselves, especially those with mossy,
........warm caves, begin to think

........of the birds that will come -- six, a dozen -- to sleep
........inside their bodies? And don't you hear
........the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
........the everlasting being crowned with the first
........tuffets of snow? The pond
........vanishes, and the white field over which
........the fox runs so quickly brings out
........its blue shadows. And the wind pumps its
........bellows. And at evening especially,
........the piled firewood shifts a little,
........longing to be on its way.
The Last larf !

His wife had just bought a new line of expensive cosmetics absolutely guaranteed to make her look years longer. She sat in front of the mirror for what had to be hours applying the "miracle" products. Finally, when she was done, she turned to her husband and said, "Honey, honestly now, what age would you say I am?"

He nodded his head in assessment, and carefully said, "Well, judging from your skin, twenty. Your hair, eighteen. Your figure, twenty-five."

"Oh, you're so sweet!"

"Well, hang on, I'm not done adding it up yet..."
