Happy New Year and let’s make it a good one.
Personally I’ve started with my fingers crossed, completely optimistic, training programme and I’m looking forward to the possibility of racing again in 2021.   We’ve even embraced Dry January, which is a significant challenge when you consider that during 2020 I gained a loyalty card from the bottle bank.

From the look of FB, Strava, and the chance socially distanced sightings whilst out running, it looks like many of you are also picking up the training and making best use of your government allowed exercise opportunities. It’s also great to see so many of you joining in the club zoom sessions.

Whilst it is wonderful to see so much smiley activity we do need to be mindful of our personal responsibility to remain within the letter and spirit of the current guidelines, recognising that this is the best way back to racing and Beach Hut fun times.

Obviously, the club is eager to support you in this so please keep active in the FB forum, inspiring other to keep on moving, but we would ask that everything remains legal, which currently means no group rides or runs.

I'm sure you remember that with the charity donation and Club Poppy appeal we finished 2020 in a supportive manner; below you’ll find some thank yous from some of the recipients, with more to come.
We also have a contribution from stalwart club member, Mike Osborne, as well as some BTF updates.

We continue to work in the background to strengthen the clubs future by building the club plan. We will reveal more as we go along and there will be more opportunities to support the running of club matters - more to follow.

For now, stay safe, keep on moving, don’t stop rockin. If you see the Tribe out running, wave and smile - high fives and hugs come later

Coaches Corner

New Year message from your coaches

Ok boys and girls here we go again, not the best start to the new year, the pools are closed, we can only meet in pairs and we must adhere to the social distancing guidelines when exercising. But…… we still have our ZOOM sessions to keep us going.

Monday at 7pm – S&C gluts and core - Lesley

Tuesday at 7pm - Turbo Tuesdays - Jo

ZOOM Links for both of these sessions can be found on the Facebook forum or message myself (S&C) or Jo Lovell (Turbo) for the links and we will send them to you direct.

To help keep you motivated and challenged we plan to post on the forum some run interval sessions, these should help give you a bit of variety during some of your training sessions.

We must all help each other to stay motivated and follow the Government’s guidelines so that we can get back to what we consider more normal activities as soon as possible. Other people may not necessarily consider our activities normal but we do.

Cross Country Consultation

Following the announcement in December from UK Athletics regarding cross country, England Athletics is supporting the consultation with cross country clubs and their athletes, cross country competition providers and the cross country community to capture thoughts on how cross country can provide equal opportunities for all participants at all levels in the future.

Whilst athletics is an incredibly inclusive sport, there could be greater equity in some cross country races and competitions by enabling all athletes access to the same opportunities through the race distances available to them.

Recognising that there are differences of opinion as to how best to achieve equality within cross country, the following survey will enable us to better understand the views of clubs, their athletes, volunteers and organisations as to what greater equity in cross country should look like and how to deliver it.

World Athletics competitions currently have the same distances for male and female participants, Scottish Athletics have already equalised all their events along with some leagues throughout the UK. In addition, leagues, county, area and national championships in England have had equal distances at under-11, under-13 and under-15 age groups for the last 10 years.

To move this forward in the most practical way, it is important that we engage and listen to cross country clubs and their senior athletes, cross country competition providers, cross country leagues and other cross country stakeholders to understand what equal access means to them and then act on the feedback received in fulfilling our aspiration for greater equity in cross country in the future.

Take the survey

The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete and is designed to get the views of clubs/organisations and individual athletes. Please forward the link to your cross country members. We will also be promoting the survey link separately to registered athletes that have an interest in cross country. The survey will close on 29 January.

Thanks for your help,
England Athletics, working with UK Athletics

A Poem and A Recipe - Mike Osbourne

Busy overnight…

The blind twin sculptors of Wave and Tide

Carved a new landscape in the night

Of unexpectedly fine, faintly golden sand.

Lapping tongues of the incoming tide

Are now tasting last night’s delight.

Next day…

Playmates Wave and Tide

Left their toys scattered on the sand,

Many, many, pebbles from their night time games

Carelessly cast aside.

4 Bean and Sweet Potato Chilli

2 onions

3 garlic cloves

3 sweet potatoes

Knorr stock cube (or equivalent)

3 medium strength fresh chillis from Lidl (or Flaked dried chilli)  to taste.

2 tins tomatoes

1 tin kidney beans

1 tin cannelloni beans

1 tin black eye beans

1 tin lentils

Salt and pepper

  1. Chop up onions, garlic and sweet potatoes.
  2. Gently fry onions, garlic, sweet potatoes, and chillis and add stock cube.
  3. Drain and wash beans and lentils. You can use any combination of beans. I am counting lentils as beans otherwise I have to change the title. (You can also use dried beans/lentils, soak overnight before cooking them thoroughly).
  4. Add the beans and tomatoes to the fry pan.
  5. Add some water so it won’t get too dry through evaporation while cooking.
  6. Simmer very gently for 30 mins or longer. Put a lid on it, if you have one. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  7. Served with Quinoa and a waldorf salad. Or more sensibly basmati brown rice.
