Week of 1 January 2021

🖐 Happy New Year! First, I want to thank everyone that read my emails thus far. Knowing people choose to give some of their attention to my work helps keep me going.

For this week's issue, here's a round up of episodes during 2020 which I found were the most interesting and inciteful!

NIGEL'S TOP 3 OF 2020

Why each episode could be relevant for you

  • The Truth About 1000 True Fans. This episode might inspire you to think about taking social media seriously to build a following. If you can manage to get a thousand fans, then getting enough income to sustain your life outside of work might not be a dream.
  • How To Love Criticism. If you've ever been affected by negative feedback from work (or life), then this episode is for you. Get a glimpse of how an intense feedback culture works at one of the best hedge funds today.
  • Calm Founder Alex Tew on What It Takes To Build Viral Products Today. Virality is the holy grail in a world of social media and mobile devices. This episode gives you an idea how something like meditation and mindfulness became viral.

The Truth about 1000 True Fans + Pricing Our Attention | a16z Podcast

  • Start creating today and find your 1,000 true fans. With 1,000 people willing to buy anything you sell (assuming $100 worth of 'something' a year), you can make a decent living. The difficulty lies in finding those fans. Therefore start doing something like blogging, vlogging, etc and begin gathering your fans.
  • Reconsider where you spend your (scarce) attention. At an average, we surrender our attention for $3 an hour across various forms of media and entertainment. As companies vying for our attention increases, the corresponding value and price of our attention should follow.

How To Love Criticism | WorkLife with Adam Grant

  • Gather a challenge network that isn't afraid to call you an a$$#@! If feedback equals learning and you want to learn as quickly as possible, then you owe it to yourself to get confidants that will give you uncensored feedback often. Try calling an ex-colleague today and ask, "What were highlights working with me? What did you expect from me that I didn't deliver?"
  • Give permission to your colleagues to be brutally honest with you. On your next team meeting, take a few minutes to highlight things you want to work on (like using less 'uhm' or 'like' in your sentences). Tell them they are welcome to cut you off when you screw up.
  • Rate yourself the next time you get feedback. If you make excuses and become defensive, you fail. Rather, you should say, "Thanks for that. Tell me more." Even Ray Dalio feels bad about negative feedback. The difference is, he gets over it in a second, and focuses on lessons learned.

Calm Founder Alex Tew on What It Takes To Build Viral Products Today | 20VC

  • Fix a problem that people will need all the time. For example, a rested and healthy mind is something that people need all the time. That's why Calm is going to be useful for many decades to come.
  • To go viral, you need to hit a nerve. Virality is independent of channel or gimmicks. If you have powerful enough idea, people will find ways to share it. In the age of social media, if you don't go viral within days, then it's probably time to try the next bold idea.
  • Create space to daydream. To get a great idea, sometimes you need to free yourself of pressure and expectations. Carve out time to do nothing at all to let your creativity loose.
