Analysis of breed Caesarean Sections
We are grateful to Cassie Smith for allowing us to reproduce her recent analysis of the rates of caesarean sections in pedigree dogs, as published in the Breed Records Supplements.
Her chart (in our blog post) shows reported C-Section rates for KC registered litters in the first half of 2019, for breeds with 30 or more litters registered in that time (number of litters for each breed in brackets).
Mini Wires are 4th in the list and Wires are 15th. Smooths are 19th. However, if you ignore the separation of Bulldogs and French Bulldogs into Breed Standard and Non-Breed Standard Colours, this puts the Mini Wires at No. 3, Wires at 13 and Smooths at 17th.
As a breed, they can be very slow to whelp and it may be that some owners go to the vet early, as a precautionary measure.

Kennel Club announces CombiBreed DNA test packages for Miniature Dachshunds
The Kennel Club and Weatherbys have introduced a further 38 CombiBreed™ health test packages, available for 41 new breeds, in order to provide a simplified process for canine genetic health testing for the benefit of both dog breeders and owners, and help to eradicate some of the most concerning genetic disorders facing certain breeds. This brings the total number of breeds eligible for the health packages to 61.
The new tests are available for Miniature Wire-Haired Dachshund (Lafora and Cord1 PRA), Miniature Long-Haired Dachshund (Cord1 PRA), Miniature Smooth-Haired Dachshund (Cord1 PRA).
CombiBreed® health test packages simplify the process of genetic testing by using a single cheek swab to check a dog’s DNA for all of the breed’s priority DNA tests. By making genetic testing more accessible, it will help responsible breeders work towards eradicating these conditions and will encourage first time breeders to make the health of the puppies they breed a priority.
Results from these tests will automatically be recorded on the dog’s record, and will be freely available on The Kennel Club website, allowing puppy buyers to check if the dog they are thinking of buying has come from health-tested parents.

Have you bought a puppy during 2019 or 2020?
A team of researchers at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) wants to improve the lives of puppies and dogs, but they need your help with this survey!
Puppy buying can be an exciting and emotional time for households, but buying and owning a new puppy can also present a range of challenges. The RVC team is interested in learning about the puppy buying process from owners who acquired puppies in 2019 and/or 2020. By understanding how and why people buy puppies, we can learn where things go ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in that process. This will help future owners avoid pitfalls and help target advice to owners who have experienced problems purchasing their puppy.
Who can take part?
Dog owners who meet all of the following four criteria:

Are over 18 years of age.

Resident in the United Kingdom.

Brought a puppy of any breed or crossbreed home aged under 16 weeks during 2019 or 2020.

Purchased your puppy from a private seller (i.e. you did not breed them yourself, you paid for the puppy AND you did not obtain them from a formal rescue organisation, as we are interested in the process of buying a puppy).
N.B. Even if you no longer own your puppy/dog, we would still like to hear from you.

New, co-opted Breed Council Secretary
Jaime Hall (Confundax Dachshunds) has been co-opted as Breed Council Secretary. Jaime will serve until the 2021 AGM when she can stand for election and formal appointment.
Jaime currently owns a Mini Long, a Mini Smooth and a St. Bernard, and has previously owned several other breeds.

Prioritising health in Dachshunds - introducing the IVDD scheme supported by the Kennel Club
The growing demand for Dachshunds from the everyday puppy buyer, coupled with the already recognised health problems in some Dachshunds, has led The Kennel Club Neurology Development Group - comprised of dog health experts, academics, specialist vets and breeders - to develop The Kennel Club IVDD Scheme, in partnership with Dachshund Health UK.
The Kennel Club IVDD Scheme will be available for all Dachshund varieties and is based on the already existing Dachshund Breed Council Screening Programme and evidence from Scandinavia, which shows the risk of IVDD is correlated with the number of intervertebral disc calcifications.
From early 2021, participating veterinary practices located across the UK will offer x-ray screening and subsequent back scoring by a scrutineer. Scrutineers, who are all neurology experts, use a pre-defined protocol to grade the dog from zero to three, depending on the number of calcifications present in the spine. The higher the number of calcifications found, the more at risk a dog is for developing clinical signs, and passing the disease on to offspring.
