St. John the Baptist Church

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In a few days, we shall be ushering in a brand New Year. Some of us may have listed resolutions to guide us for the coming year.  For the coming  New Year, may we also reflect on how our lives were spent the past year. Each day comes and goes. And, we age a day older each day.  How have we lived those days past? Our response may differ from one another. Our answers may differ from one another. If we feel that we could have done more, change is not that far away. There is always that opportunity for change and to be resolute once more.

Earlier in life, I had wished the New Year would have come much sooner. To me, that would mean a new set of clothes. It also meant making good on certain promises, like becoming a better person, studying harder to do better in school, and attending Church more diligently. The Catholic Church celebrates Mary, the Mother of God, on the first day of a New Year. Mary plays a vital role for every Catholic as well as to the rest of the world. Mary’s fiat is ours too, for we know God is always in control in our lives as well as in the world. He knows the number of hair on our heads. The Gospel of Luke 12:5-6 says: “I shall show you whom to fear.  Be afraid of the one who, after killing, has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of the one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.”

Let us renew our faith in God each day. May God always guide our path to the Light of Christ. And may the workings and power of the Holy Spirit enable us to see the hands of God each day in our lives. May God, through the gentle love of Mary, our Mother, helps us to recognize the sweetness of God’s Mercy. May God’s providence continue to accompany us this coming New Year. I hope you will join us virtually tomorrow as we honor Mary, the Mother of God at 10:00 am via our livestream

My best wishes and a blessed New Year to All.
