A Blackfoot Movement Story

An elder once said to picture yourself in the stories so you can understand and relate to the story better. The Blackfoot creation story was made into a movement story to help students get involved in the learning of the story.

The movements in the story will also help support the development of physical literacy, through the exploration of different gross motor movements, repetition and fun.

This resource was created in partnership with Livingstone Range School Division through a project grant from the Recreation and Physical Activity Branch of the Alberta Government. The project was designed to bridge movement, specifically in a school setting, with traditional Indigenous culture and knowledge. A special thank you to Sandra Lamouche for her valuable contribution to this project.

This resource can be used in a gymnasium or a classroom setting. It can be read like a book or posted as a temporary or permanent circuit where students can travel from station to station reading and moving at their own pace.

Thank you to Trevor Prairie Chicken, a Blackfoot artist from the Piikani Nation for his artwork depicting the Blackfoot story about creation.

You can download the story here.

May 26th, 2021- 1-3pm

Stay Tuned for Calendar Invitation

This won’t be like any Summit we’ve held before.

When the 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit takes place at the end of January, it will be accessible to anyone worldwide with an Internet connection. We have an unprecedented opportunity to reach people regardless of their ability to afford travel to our traditional venue in Gatineau, Quebec and we’re excited to offer an expanded two-day francophone program. For the first time, delegates will get the chance to hear from leading experts and take part in collaborative educational opportunities from the comfort of their own homes. With seven keynotes, 95 presentations and 1000+ anticipated attendees, it promises to be one of our most impactful Summits yet.

All Sport One City is the perfect way for everyone of all ages 6 and up to try a new sport – or to get back into activities you’ve been away from. With over 100 FREE activities in six weeks, you’ll get active, have fun, and maybe make some new friends.

What does “all sport” mean? Well, you might try parkour, or wheelchair basketball. Or discover that fencing isn’t something that keeps out the neighbour’s dog. And you might like it so much that you keep going back!

Registration for All Sport One City opens January 2021. Check sportcalgary.ca/all-sport-one-city for more information in the coming weeks.

Students can learn more and register to attend (or submit a proposal to present!) through the SLC website

Questions about the conference can be directed to any one of our SLC Team Members:
Celebrating Indigenous Physical Literacy

Every Indigenous school has its own unique needs, but one thing they have in common with the rest of the school system is it’s difficult to convince the administration and teachers to set aside meaningful time for movement and physical literacy. Following a project that aims to change that, Sport for Life is releasing seven videos that celebrate the accomplishments of Indigenous schools in Canada. You can read more about this project here.

To find ways to explore and include Indigenous activities into your program check out this link to the videos mentioned above.

Nutrition and Wellness Tips

Nutrition Tip

Superfood or Superhype?

With a new year come the New Year resolutions. The buzz advice of ‘superfoods’ might not be all it's cracked up to be. The term ‘superfood’ is a marketing term rather than a term used by experts, dietitians, or nutrition scientists. It is generally meant to identify certain foods that have health benefits because of nutrient density. However, there are no magic bullets in nutrition. Eating a variety of multi-coloured vegetables throughout the day is your best approach to a healthy new year. Make it a habit to eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and plant based protein foods often. Follow the EatWell Plate for a healthy new year (check out this YouTube Video).

My name is Josh White; I graduated from the Health and Physical Education Degree – Physical Literacy in April 2020. Throughout my Physical Literacy Degree I worked as a strength and conditioning coach and I even owned a personal training studio during the final year of my degree. With the COVID pandemic, I unfortunately had to close my personal training studio. However, I am grateful that I completed my degree because it gave me the skills to pivot into another area of the fitness industry.

Currently, I am working as the commercial sales representative at The Fitness Factory, where I am responsible for all business-to-business sales within Western Canada. My degree has helped me connect with a wide-variety of clients and the knowledge I have gained has allowed me to both educate my clients on the benefits of physical activity and provide them with the right tools to be physically active for life!
