Healing Authenticity

Dear ones,

As I watched my news feeds and inbox fill with New Year's messages I observed just how much blame 2020 is getting as if it's somehow responsible for our current condition. As if placing anger and hostility against the year might do something or like turning a page with the stroke of midnight would bring a fairy tale ending to the pandemic. I tend to see the whole pandemic as something for which we are responsible (a very weakened global ecosystem and collective energy system that let "disease" enter in) and deeply linked to how we treat our environment and ourselves. To say it's 2020's fault has no meaning to me.

I watched the lists of accomplishments, resolutions, reflections and, by watching and listening, didn't feel much like writing to you because I didn't really feel like I had much to say. I'm excited for the accomplishments of others and love hearing the reflections of others but something about listing my own felt weird. Not needed.

Instead of writing just for the sake of it, I waited. I even decided to not have any pressure of having to "deliver" a message right now at all. Which is entirely true.

Instead of focusing on what I did or didn't do this year or what might come, I felt instead into my heart. I felt into relationships. Those that are current and continue to grow and evolve, those that are left in the past for whatever reason, and those with the people who have transitioned past this earthy existence.

Before I knew it I found myself at our old piano looking for sheet music to play Auld Lang Syne at about 11:20 p.m. on New Year's Eve. I have barely played piano for 25 years and was never great at sight reading. Still, I sat and played it through slowly a few times. As I did I felt my heart strings move like an unstruck chord. I felt connection to all through my heart. And felt message:

To all of you dear ones, here, parted, moments remembered and forgotten - you are loved.

Something told me to create a short video of my playing and share it with these words. So I listened (here it is on Instagram) and a song that we sing in Ireland to say goodbye came through to describe this year and what it means to me: Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.

It felt exactly right and authentic to share this. And to honor the fluidity of life and relationship. What happens when we can learn how to let go and participate in and with life as it is?

After I posted the video I watched it and could see the training in my hands from years of piano lessons. Even though I hadn't used these skills for such a long time, and I was rusty, I could see it. I was surprised.

It made me realize that any practice or training we have, over time, becomes embodied and engrained in us even when we don't use it. I feel this, of course, from my own yoga, meditation and healing journey but to see it in such a clear example resonated. Like all of this information is just in me and in you -- and the more we have it embodied (usually through practice and repetition, like in meditation) the more available it is for us to draw upon. The more I learn how to understand what it is I'm feeling, for example, and where it resides in my body, the more I can learn to trust what is arising and work with it. The more I can then connect with myself, the moment, and others. This has been learned. This is constantly something I am practicing.

This theme has been emerging on recent podcasts as well and it has been such a privilege to record and offer three more episodes since my last newsletter to you. Tigrilla Gardenia shares about what it means to connect with plants as well as the concept of an ecosystem -- not just in the plant world but in your own body and with others. The relational nature of life and how working with plants help us to thrive. Holly Ramey shares her journey of healing authenticity and holding space in particular through the Tarot and ceremony. Empress Ngala offers her journey of self love and reclamation. Each one of these episodes was deeply moving for me and helped me understand life, connection, and myself differently. I hope they bring an opening to you as well.

As it is the end of one year and the start of another, I was curious to see which of my books sold the most copies in 2020 (especially as none of them existed a year ago!). As I looked at each one, here too, instead of accomplishment I felt love. I felt the heart offering that each book is come through me again and I love them all (even those that didn't make it to the Top 10 Books of 2020. They aren't "less than" they are just as important, just as loved, and waiting for those who wish to connect with them at some time.

However you greeted this New Year, I hope you are supported, that you feel the presence of love, and have what you need in order to grow and thrive.

With love and magic,
Heather
