Christmas Greetings from Fr. David McCallum SJ

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Our message to you on this Eve of Christmas is modest and simple. One of the longings evoked most powerfully by the circumstances of this pandemic year, as we have been pushed apart and separated from loved ones and strangers alike: for closeness. We long to feel the near presence of family and friends in this season of celebration. We desire to connect (in the way that not even the most expertly facilitated Zoom session might allow) as when we are able to take someone’s hand, press our cheek against theirs, and give them the sheltering space of our care, our tenderness. In this most “mammal” dimension of what it means to be human- that we are social beings, we also recognize the most extreme separations, that children have been separated from their parents at inhospitable borders, that in so many hundreds of thousands of deaths, the simple comfort of presence at the bedside of a loved one has been impossible. While many families and communities have sheltered together for safety and to be safe for others, even when in constant physical proximity, we know how there can be other kinds of isolation and loneliness.
Yet, our tremendous longing for closeness is mirrored by God’s longing for intimate closeness with each of us. What we ponder and celebrate at Christmas is how that Divine desire sponsored the leap of the Second Person into the messy, confusing, even dangerous reality of what it means to be human. Jesus’ birth in such circumstances- empire, fear and hostility toward those who are “outsiders,” the violent grasping for power by tyrants, the poverty of masses of people… this is the vulnerability and humility of God, as Cardinal Tagle suggested, that God would risk so much to express his infinite, unconditional, and universal love for each of us, God’s desire to dwell with us, as “Emmanuel.”
Our prayer for our Discerning Leadership community is that in these days to follow, we are all touched by this gift of the closeness of the Divine Presence, Christ’s birth regenerating our faith, hope, and love now and for the year to come. Look for us again in the New Year!

Saludos Navideños del P. David McCallum SJ

Queridas hermanas y hermanos en Cristo,
Nuestro mensaje en esta víspera de Navidad es modesto y simple. Uno de los anhelos que evocan con más fuerza en este año de pandemia, ya que hemos sido apartados y separados tanto de nuestros seres queridos como de los desconocidos: la cercanía. Anhelamos sentir la presencia cercana de la familia y los amigos en este tiempo de celebración. Deseamos conectarnos (de la manera que ni siquiera la sesión de Zoom más expertamente facilitada podría permitir) con los demás a través de darnos la mano, darnos abrazos, y dar el refugio de nuestro cuidado, nuestra ternura. En esta dimensión más "mamífera" de lo que significa ser humano -que somos seres sociales-, reconocemos también las separaciones más extremas, que los niños han sido separados de sus padres en fronteras inhóspitas, que en tantos cientos de miles de muertes, el simple consuelo de la presencia al lado de la cama de un ser querido ha sido imposible. Si bien muchas familias y comunidades se han refugiado juntas por seguridad y para estar a salvo de los demás, incluso cuando están físicamente juntos, sabemos que puede haber otros tipos de aislamiento y soledad.
Sin embargo, nuestro tremendo anhelo de cercanía se refleja en el anhelo de Dios de una cercanía íntima con cada uno de nosotros. Lo que reflexionamos y celebramos en Navidad es cómo ese deseo divino propició el salto de la Segunda Persona a la desordenada, confusa e incluso peligrosa realidad de lo que significa ser humano. El nacimiento de Jesús en tales circunstancias - imperio, miedo y hostilidad hacia aquellos que son "forasteros", la violenta toma del poder por parte de los tiranos, la pobreza de las masas... esta es la vulnerabilidad y humildad de Dios, como sugirió el Cardenal Tagle, que Dios arriesgaría tanto para expresar su infinito, incondicional y universal amor por cada uno de nosotros, el deseo de Dios de morar con nosotros, como "Emmanuel".
Nuestra oración para nuestra comunidad de Liderazgo Discerniente es que en estos días que siguen, todos seamos tocados por este regalo de la cercanía de la Presencia Divina, el nacimiento de Cristo regenerando nuestra fe, esperanza y amor ahora y para el año que viene. ¡Nos vemos en el Nuevo Año!
