End of Year 2020 Bulletin

A word from the Chief of Party, Prof. William Bazeyo

Dear Readers,

Throughout the year 2020, RAN working with its partners continued with efforts to contribute to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) response alongside other mandates. Starting May 2020, we engaged in several activities as we worked to ‘Be a Contribution’ to the communities in which we live and serve.

We successfully engaged stakeholders as we disseminated a report sharing the Costs, Benefits and Challenges of National Digital Identification Systems in East Africa.

We also unveiled the Bulamu Low Cost Medical Ventilator. The Ventilator is undergoing animal tests and the results will inform a clinical trial in humans.

In addition, we embarked on scaling of the EpiTent-‘a tent that breathes’. 17 tents are currently in use in 5 Ugandan National Referral Hospitals and service provision centres. These include regional hospitals in the districts of Adjumani (one of the hottest parts of Uganda), Mbarara, Gulu, Mbale and Masaka. The other tents are being used at the Malaba Port-Health Department, Bombo Military Hospital, Entebbe Airport Military Base and Nebbi District Military Base.

We were also able to continue with nurturing while offering technical and incubation support to multidisciplinary innovators in response to community challenges. Notable of the innovations which thrived through this period is the Akatale Fresh application (an online store for ordering your daily Fruits, Vegetables, Spices and Herbs, Grains and Flour, Animal Products, Bread and Pastries, Dairy Products, Seafood and many) www.akatalefresh.com/, MyLib application www.facebook.com/myliblive (an interactive digital primary curriculum) and the Centres4Her application (a mobile application that links girls and women experiencing violence to available support services and sexual reproductive services)  shorturl.at/fyS23

I want to thank the RAN team under the leadership of Dr. Roy William Mayega, the RAN Deputy Chief of Party for braving the COVID-19 pandemic and thriving amidst all the challenges of the year 2020. I also want to thank our donors; the Government of the Republic of Uganda, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), UN Women, Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology and National Guidance and Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation among others who have continued to support our activities during this time; working in uncertain conditions especially given the deadly Coronavirus.

As we come to the close of this year, I take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy 2021. We are all praying and hoping that very soon, we will get back to normal operations when the pandemic is long gone. In the meantime, let us all get acquainted to the New Normal.

COVID-19 is real, Remain Safe, adhere to the Standard Operation Procedures.

Enjoy reading.

A highlight of our recent notable activities

‘Identify, incubate and bring to scale initiatives that promote sustainable self-reliance of communities in developing countries and break the cycles of dependence’

In order to progress from low income to middle- and high-income status, developing countries require substantial shifts in their approach to development interventions. This will involve substantial shifts in approaches to developing interventions that focus on key factors that will accelerate the leap-forward into socio-economic transformation. The ‘Agency for Self-Reliance’ buy-in at RAN is funded by USAID’s Centre for Development Research (CDR), as part of an agency-wide strategy to support interventions that will identify, incubate and bring to scale initiatives that promote sustainable self-reliance of communities in developing countries and break the cycles of dependence.
