December 25, 2020

Happy Holidays! This brief issue is your last "In the Loop" for 2020. We’re taking next week off, and will be back on January 8, 2021.

News from your Saratoga Springs Democratic Party:

Make a difference in 2021 as a candidate for local office. In Saratoga Springs, the interview process will begin soon for potential candidates for city council positions; for more information contact SSDC Chair Sarah Burger: sarah.burger@saratogadems.org. Todd Kerner, Chair of the Saratoga County Democratic Party, invites anyone who would like to be a candidate for County Clerk, Sheriff, Surrogate Court Judge or Coroner to contact him at chair@saratogacountydems.org with a resume or description of qualifications.

Georgia runoffs are less than 2 weeks away. Support Democratic candidates and flip the senate. Tired of seeing felons pardoned while the Republican Senate looks on in silence? Cast a vote for decency by supporting our two candidates who, if both win, will create a Democratic majority. This Fair Fight ActBlue page collects funds to be split evenly among the Warnock and Ossoff campaigns and Stacey Abram’s Fair Fight voter mobilization drive.

Most events are still virtual, but many are now onsite. For in-person events, assume that proper COVID-19 precautions will be mandatory including social distancing and masks at all times.

Ends New Year’s Eve: The Non-Winter Gala to support Saratoga Central Catholic School. There’s no live gala this year, but you can still contribute to the prosperity of Saratoga Catholic by becoming a sponsor and/or buying a 50/50 lottery ticket. Only 500 tickets will be sold and the winner will be drawn on New Year’s Eve at 6 pm by a Saratoga Catholic student. Details here.

Wednesday, December 30, 7:00 pm. Opera Saratoga presents America Sings. The first in a new monthly series meant to amplify the voices of artists from racial groups historically underrepresented on the concert stage. Each month, America Sings will feature a combination of music across the genres of classical, jazz and popular music featuring an array of diverse, internationally acclaimed artists. This month will feature soprano Brandie Sutton with pianist and composer Damien Sneed, both debuting with the company at the turn of the new year. Streaming live from Caffé Lena via YouTube; if you like the performance please leave a tip for Opera Saratoga.

Local news and happenings:

Saratoga Springs Public Library closed to the public until December 28 due to COVID exposures. Librarians will be working remotely and will be available via phone or email from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, December 26. As always, digital materials will be available via the library’s website. Check the library’s online event calendar, or follow us on Facebook, for virtual program offerings during this period.  The library will be completely closed on Christmas Day. Library return drops will be open, however borrowers are encouraged to hold on to any items they have checked out until the building reopens. There are no fines for overdue materials, and the period for items on hold will be extended. More information here.

Saratoga Peace Pod invites crafters to knit for the better good. The newly formed group will actively support the work and mission of Knitting4Peace, which has created and delivered warm handmade items to over 184,000 people in need in the US and in 82 countries around the world. Although we are currently meeting virtually, we are looking forward to gathering in person for coffee and crafting, helping each other with needlework challenges, and blissful socializing. Join us in creating such items as hats, scarves, mittens, booties, baby blankets, baby bibs, afghans, quilted sleeping mats, Peace Pal dolls, shawls, and washcloths with our first deliveries planned for mid-January 2021. Please contact Rachel Baum at saratogapeacepod@yahoo.com if you are interested in joining.
