COVID-19 updates for Guaymas, Sonora & Mexico

In Guaymas / San Carlos, as of yesterday, there were 2,179 cases (35 new cases last week), and 231 deaths (2 last week). There were 298 new cases in Sonora yesterday (19 in Guaymas / San Carlos). Of the 49,962 confirmed cases in Sonora, 35,995  have recovered, 3,879 died and 522 are hospitalized (up from 513 last week. 332 serious and 100 on ventilators).

Sonora Hospital Occupancy. The Secretary of Health of Sonora again reported that there are no COVID beds available in private hospitals in Hermosillo and public hospitals in Sonora are getting full (the municipalities with the highest saturation are SLRC with 90%, Hermosillo 77%, Magdalena 71% and Nogales 50%. Guaymas is at 47% occupancy).

For the 2 weeks beginning December 21, Sonora remains in "orange" according to Mexico’s four-color semáforo, or traffic light, Coronavirus rating system.

Today, Mexico had 12,099 new cases and 990 deaths for a total of 1,401,529 confirmed cases (1,058,429 have recovered and 219,255 are active) and 123,845 deceased.

Vaccine in Mexico. On December 27, the second batch of vaccines arrived in Mexico from the Pfizer plant in Belgium. Health care workers will begin receiving the vaccine. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that vaccination of older adults against COVID-19 will begin in January.

The use of face masks is mandatory in public and “common use” spaces. For example, in restaurants, it is mandatory to wear a mask upon entry and when moving inside the establishment, only removing the mask to drink and eat.

Border travel restrictions continue through January 21, 2020. The travel restrictions have been in place since March 21 and apply to non-essential land traffic to and from the US and Mexico and the US and Canada. Mexico does not seem to be enforcing the restrictions, and US citizens have been able to drive across the border.

Fishing, Birding & Diving Reports

Fishing Report

The fishing was a little slow this week, but maybe the fish were full. I marked tons of bait, and sometimes you could just see them in the water. The Seamounts produced a few nice fish on a couple days, and I may have caught the last Bonita. San Pedro gave up a few fish to jigs and lures, but was quiet at times as well.

The dolphin were around and the orcas were seen once. There were a lot of nice days, but the wind is up now. It's usually tough after the full moon, so might be a good time to take a few days off.

Birding Report

Hola Dear Birding Enthusiasts,

Although I am not yet in San Carlos, I have received reports from friends of Roseate Spoonbill sightings in Estero Soldado so that is my Bird of the Week. This is without doubt the bird most associated with San Carlos and the one I am often asked about even though people at times think they are seeing Flamingos. There are no Flamingos in this area. With its spatula-like bill and pink coloring, it is one of the most unusual and unmistakable wading birds and it should be here through spring.

According to Birdsoftheworld.com, there is relatively little known about this bird. It is neo-tropical with its west coast range extending north to the Guaymas/San Carlos area. In the US, it is only found in Texas along the Gulf Coast and in Florida. US populations were decimated almost to the point of extinction during the early 1800's when they were killed for their feathers. Interestingly, our photo of the Roseate Spoonbill, taken on the 26th of December by Joe Huntsman, includes the Snowy Egret, another bird almost wiped out in the US because of its beautiful plumage.

You will find the Roseate Spoonbills swinging their bills from side to side as they forage in shallow water for small aquatic animals: fish, crustaceans, insects. The bill snaps shut when it establishes contact with its prey.

Spoonbills get their pink coloration from the food they eat. Crustaceans and other invertebrates contain pigments called carotenoids that turn the feathers pink. However, from my experience observing them, how pink they appear can also have a great deal to do with how the light is reflecting off the wings. Often a slightly pink bird will be suddenly brilliantly rosy as it turns and the light catches the feathers at a different angle.

If you go to Estero Soldado in search of the Roseate Spoonbill, you don't need to be an early riser. They seem to be most active mid-morning to late afternoon. Once the sun is no longer hitting the water, they will gather, usually along the edge of Mangroves, to roost for the night.

As always, if you have any questions or comments you can contact me at maryltannehill@yahoo.com.

Happy Birding! by Mary Tannehill, photo by Joe Huntsman

Diving Report

Yes, divers are still diving...even in December! And, yes you probably need a 7mm wetsuit or a drysuit, unless you are from a colder climate zone.

A group from Phoenix did a couple of local dives a week ago. Their first dive was at Aquario/Aquarium, just on the outside of Martini Cove to the south. They reported seeing many Cortez stingrays, arrow crabs, a green moray eel and Mexican dancer nudibranchs, to name just a few.

The second dive was at Isla San Nicholas, just west of the marina San Carlos entrance...you know, the white topped island! There was an abundance of sea stars and sea urchins, and a variety of fish, like king angels, grunts, and Amarillo snappers.

Both sites had a water temperature of 61 degrees and visibility was 25 to 30 feet. Cold water diving may not be for everyone, but there are usually some rewards, like nudibranchs (pictured on left) and porcupinefish (pictured on right), that are most often seen in cooler waters.

Now is the time to rent some warm gear and have a look around underwater!
