EMES News Alert
December 2020
This was an unexpectedly harsh year for us all. And yet, we thrived; we made it. As a community of researchers working on the diverse "SE field", we have heard incredible stories about how many among you have continued your research work while being directly involved in helping with relief efforts in your communities.

It's been a year full of lessons and we look forward to continuing building a body of knowledge that can also help with the reconstruction effort across the world.

Thank you for your continued support, particularly to our members, our most solid pillars. We wish you all a 2021 full of renewed enthusiasm and shared goals.

Our 8th conference has been moved to October 2021:
The new submission deadline is March 1st!

The 8th EMES International Research Conference (#8EMESconf) was initially scheduled to take place at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) on June 21-24, 2021 but as result of the uncertainty around the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated mobility restrictions in place next summer, the Board of Directors decided to postpone the EMES conference until October 2021.

Whether in a live, digital or blended format, this unique conference aims to be a meeting place for scholars worldwide involved in social enterprise, social and solidarity economy, social entrepreneurship and social innovation research across the globe.

Should the situation not improve, we will transform the conference into a virtual event. The safety of the EMES community being our priority, this decision will be made in the course of the spring and communicated to all the accepted authors.

In the meantime, make sure to submit your abstract by March 1st!

"Towards ZAZ 2021": A series of actions and opportunities building up the road to the #8EMESconf

Thanks to the support of the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, EMES has launched a number of initiatives and opportunities to encourage exchanges and networking among Spanish-speaking community of researchers, practitioners and policy makers around the world as we pave our way to our 8th conference in Zaragoza (Spain).

In case you missed our webinar “TOWARDS ZAZ2021: Transformative Social Innovation and Social Enterprises" (held in Spanish), you can still watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZqZAqXVwS4

Here are some of the conclusions that stemmed from the webinar:
  1. Women’s real involvement together with theirs taking up a leading role in #socent is key to explain the resilience of these organizations. There is still a path to walk towards real equality: care and co-responsibility are not only #socent’s values, but also basic practices to ensure workers and collaborators’ wellbeing.
  2. Collaboration between individuals and entities consolidates as a key factor for #socent’s resilience. Actually, in a Covid-19 context, we have seen how many organizations have been able to keep on with their activities (both productive and economic) thanks to mutual support. In some cases, this collaboration has been essential for their survival.
  3. The large list of sectors where #socent are working has been increasing since the crisis of 2008 began. The importance of developing this “other way of creating economy and companies” has shown its worth in industries such as energy, agroecology, mobility, art and culture, tourism and leisure in a responsible and sustainable way…
  4. There are still numerous challenges ahead when we talk about making viable the potential of #socent. On the one hand, a specific type of finance that matches the specificity of #socent: it’s not about the amount of financial resources they need, but how they can adapt to the needs of #socent. Focusing on the pandemic, we have seen how many cooperatives dedicated to helping people in vulnerable situations have not been able to get financial support as they were not “health” organizations. It’s urgent to work hand with hand with public administrations and financial entities to make sure they count on the particularities of ##socentwhen planning public policies.
