Transformations, New Movement & Gratitude
An Invitation

As we consider more intentionally how we're moving through the world these days and feel the shifting of our energies as the light slowly grows, I pass along these wise words from Arundahti Roy, with the artwork of Colleen Kinsella & Elizabeth Jabar:

“THE PANDEMIC IS A PORTAL,

A GATEWAY BETWEEN ONE WORLD AND THE NEXT.

WE CAN CHOOSE TO WALK THROUGH IT,

DRAGGING THE CARCASSES OF OUR PREJUDICE

AND HATRED, OUR AVARICE, OUR DATA BANKS

AND DEAD IDEAS, OUR DEAD RIVERS AND

SMOKY SKIES BEHIND US.

OR WE CAN WALK THROUGH LIGHTLY,

WITH LITTLE LUGGAGE,

READ TO IMAGINE ANOTHER WORLD.

AND READ TO FIGHT FOR IT.”

-ARUNDAHTI ROY, 2020

In the words of my friend Colleen,
"What would you bring through? What would you leave behind?”

Transformations

Here's a peek at what’s happening with the evolution of the
Hamana Arts Center in Guinea where Namory and his building crew have been quite busy.

Check out the exciting progress ~
The building is up!

A Maine community journey to visit Guinea is in the works for 2022. Perhaps you'll consider joining the adventure?

Other transformations this year have included
our move to online dance & drum offerings, hybrid classes and new innovations.

Live & hybrid dance classes are projected to resume early February! Meanwhile:

FREE *YOUR* MOVEMENT - Personalized Private Lessons Online

Gain access to more ease of expression within your body, at a pace that suits your individual needs.

*These are free-form movement lessons, not traditional Guinea style dance, unless specifically requested.
  • Get “unstuck” from unhealthy movement patterns
(i.e. computer work, long commutes) or lack of movement.
  • Explore guided movement from the privacy of home.
  • Designed specifically for your needs, at your pace.
  • Invitation to turn your own camera off while stretching and exploring movement, if it helps you to feel more free.
I have been teaching movement classes for 20 years and dancing all my life. I have personal experience with both the mental inhibitions and physical limitations that can prevent us from fully enjoying and expressing in our bodies. I'm passionate about sharing my learning to help others find and access more freedom within their body. Whether you’ve ever danced or not, I will meet you where you are.

Response from a private lesson student in December 2020:

"I felt really good after that session. Thank you!! I need that!"

Our dear friend Sayon Camara teaches drum class weekly Mondays on facebook live. ~ His classes resume January 4th.
We end each class with this gesture of gratitude from the heart.
Gratitude

Gratitude flows and spills over for the community that held together and continued to grow this year;

for our talented drummers continuing to bring the live rhythms and pass along the knowledge;

and for the many students who joined us in the field and online as we shifted to hybrid classes.

As many can attest, movement is medicine.
This year moving with community truly kept me well.
A heartfelt THANK YOU, to all who continue to support local artists and help sustain us as we swerve, pivot, swirl, bend, leap and stretch in new directions to keep the offerings flowing.

Your support ensures there will still be art, music, dance and community to enjoy it with when we get to the other side of all this.  I appreciate you!!
Recognize this? This where we danced all summer, and will again!

Movement Medicine for Social Change

I reserve a percentage from the classes I teach at Embody the Rhythm to support the work of important social change initiatives.

In 2020 contributions supported the building of Hamana Arts Center in Guinea, as well as Maine Wabanaki REACH, For Us By Us, and Black Girl in Maine Media. If you are able to contribute directly to any of these organizations, your funds will be well spent.

Happy Holidays and many blessings to you in the year ahead.
I look forward to dancing with you again in early 2021!
