December 2020 - Vol. 1, No. 12

We're tired but we made it through 2020!

Can you believe it? We survived the crazy year that was 2020!

We should have known that 2020 would be one for the ages when it started with the 82nd Airborne Division deployed just days into the new year.

From there, the roller coaster ride of the year picked up momentum as a mere month later, we all learned a new word, "social distance," as the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic.

Since then, the ride has been teeth-chattering bumpy.

The year was highlighted by frenetic toilet-paper hoarding madness as we dashed from one grocery store to another like we were looking for the Holy Grail. Sometimes, it felt like we crawled at a snail's pace while negotiating endless ZOOM and MS Teams meetings at either our telework job or helping the kids with online classes wherever we could find quiet.

Throw in the down-right awfulness and ugliness of some people throughout the year, often over the most meaningless things, and 2020 was often tiring and a slog that will hopefully be forgotten with time.

While we are not out of the woods by any stretch, at least we can finally say, "Goodbye and good riddance 2020!" (I would actually like to say something else in this forum, but this is a family-friendly newsletter!)

Top Instagram images of 2020

With busted sports photo assignments from March through October, I managed to make a few images here and there to keep folks interested.

Be sure to be on the lookout in the coming days for my annual Year in Review, a video recap through my camera lenses.

It will be posted on all my social media platforms.

In the meantime, here are my top 9 Instagram images for 2020 as selected by your "Likes" and thank you for your continued support!

Lady Vikings continue conference dominance

You could call it December Dominance as the Union Pines Lady Vikings volleyball team rolled through the 3A Tri-County 6 Conference.

Triton was first on the chopping block, Dec. 1, as the Lady Vikings sent the Hawks back to Erwin with a 3-0 loss.

The Lady Vikings rolled off three road game wins between Dec. 3 and 10, knocking off Western Harnett (3-1), Harnett Central (3-2 including an incredible 35-33 first set score), and Lee County 3-0.

The Lady Vikings returned home to Bob Ward Gymnasium, Dec. 18, knocking off Southern Lee, 3-0, before the Christmas/New Year break.

Prots becomes All-Time Digs leader

If you've never seen Morgan Prots play volleyball, I am sad for you. (I never saw her sister, Alex, play and I'm sad about that!)

Morgan broke the 1,146 dig mark (actually finishing the night at 1,159) in a 3-0 win over Southern Lee, Dec. 18.

You can read more about Morgan in a recent feature article in The Pilot.

You can see more from the record-setting match here.

Basketball gets "blackout" senior portraits

"Blackout" senior portraits sessions returned Dec. 23 for the Union Pines Women's and Men's basketball teams.

The "blackout" #sportstraits is a new service I am offering this year on a trial basis. Based on the response so far, I will most likely offer them again for the 2021-22 sports year.

I am currently slated to photograph the women's soccer team in early 2021.

If you are interested, please have that particular sports head coach contact me for details and to set-up a session.

You can see more from the basketball "blackout" sportstrait session here.

Lady Vikings fall to...Lady Vikings

Dec. 30 - Union Pines hosted the other Lady Vikings from Northwest Guilford in a non-conference match.

While the 3-0 loss may have stung a little, Union Pines was all-in against a much taller, faster, and power-hitting Northwest Guilford team.

Despite the season's only loss, Union Pines remains undefeated (8-0) in the 3A Tri-County 6 Conference with two games remaining; a
Jan. 5 trip to Erwin against Triton and their final regular-season home match, Jan. 7, hosting Western Harnett.

On a sadder note, Morgan Prots played her final game in a Union Pines jersey. She will be missed by all. Good luck in your future endeavors at Mount Olive.
