PORTELAS IN CAMBODIA
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-15 (NIV)

Lockdown 3.0

Dear friends and family,

As I write this, we are half packed and getting ready for a short trip outside of the city. We are very much looking forward to some different scenery after having spent our last three weeks of school online (again) and finishing the term in a rather anticlimactic way. Of our 17 week term, shorter than our usual by a few weeks, we had 9 weeks on campus and 8 weeks online. It has been a time where we have learned to be flexible and adaptable, switching quickly back and forth as the Ministry of Education has closed and opened campuses depending on the situation in the country. Today we were notified that we may open our campus again in January. Praise the Lord! We are thankful that the situation in Cambodia has continued to improve following the community transmission “incident” which caused the schools to close in December. David is also looking forward to some rest after an intense fourth term at the IRTC. The college's first term in 2021 begins in February, so January will be filled with administrative tasks to prepare for the year to come.

We had a lovely Christmas celebration with our kids, zooming in with extended family and truly cherishing the opportunity we had to have some friends over on Christmas Day. With travel being very limited, many of our friends were still in the city for the Christmas holidays and we were glad for the chance to connect with them over the holiday season.
We have enjoyed an unusually cool December!

Pressing on

As we look ahead to 2021, I have been encouraged by Paul’s words in Philippians 3:13-15:

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

One thing we have learned this year is just how much of the future is unknown to us, just how little control we really have, and just how much we need to depend on God. Trusting in his provision, protection and purpose for our lives. Paul’s words are encouraging because they remind us that despite what is happening around us, we can press on towards the goal that Christ has laid out for us; one that does not depend on earthly success or possessions, but that is centered on His kingdom and His glory. And we can focus on that no matter how isolated, locked-down or quarantined we are. Let us keep our sights on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith as we enter a new year full of unknowns. The One who knows it all is with us. Emmanuel.

We are so thankful to all of you for your prayer and support of our family over the last year. May God bless you richly in the year to come. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Dwelling in Him,

Taara (with David, Lucas, Elena, Lisa and Leila)

Please pray:

  • Our HOPE staff who are trying to get into Cambodia can get visas from their respective embassies.
  • HOPE International School is starting to raise funds to purchase our property. We are looking for donations from those who have a heart to support Christian education and missionary work.
  • For David's overall health as he is struggling with some recurring issues.
  • For our family members who are far away, some of whom are in the group most at risk.

Praise the Lord for:

  • Permission from the government to reopen the Hope campus in January. Pray for Cambodia to maintain its vigilance and control over the COVID situation.
  • A wonderful Christmas break and the opportunity to travel out of the city for a short vacation.
  • Continued good health for all of us.

Monthly support: Since the Cambodian economy functions in US$, we've been hard-hit by the drop in exchange rate for currencies such as the Canadian Dollar and the Brazillian Real. Please consider partnering with us financially to help us make up for these shortfalls.
