 Happy New Year! It’s 2021 and we are excited to come out of a year that was not so great with hopes that this year will be much better and healthier. Even though we continue to provide programs in a virtual setting, we are excited for what’s to come in our community this January.

New year, new 2021 Annual Campaign Theme!
The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis is excited to kick off the 2021 Annual Campaign with the theme MOVING FORWARD in 2021! It is a new beginning for the Jewish Federation as the organization continues MOVING FORWARD with the work it does for the Jewish community both in Indianapolis and around the world. The Federation is coming off of a successful 2020 Annual Campaign and looks FORWARD to continuing this momentum in 2021. More information on the new campaign theme and campaign numbers is available in the January/February Federation News magazine, and final 2020 campaign numbers will be reported in the March/April magazine edition.

Want to stay connected with friends and neighbors and make an impact in your community this January while staying safe? Then grab some friends and join the Indy Teen Service Challenge, a week of activities, learning opportunities, and challenges to engage in spirit of service and volunteering honored through Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Challenge will run from Friday, Jan. 15 to Sunday, Jan. 24 and includes:

This virtual event features a hilarious and often poignant pre-recorded interview of Lewis Black by 13-year-old Sophie Maurer, the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library’s Free Speech Ambassador. The two will be seeing it for the first time with the audience before taking questions about free speech, Lewis’s life, why he switched from wanting to be a rabbi to wanting to be a comedian, and whatever else comes up. Cost is $10.

ECE Teacher Cookbook
JCC’s Assistant Director of Summer Care/Camp worked with her ECE co-workers to collect recipes and create the ECE Family Cookbook! Every ECE teacher submitted a recipe or two. All proceeds directly benefit the ECE program.
Cost is $20 for a hard copy and $15 for a PDF. Books will be available for pickup beginning the week of Jan. 4. That's when they will email out the PDF for those who choose that option.

Post COVID-19 Recovery Program from Hooverwood Living beginning January 4, 2021.
Hooverwood Living has partnered with Rehab Strategies to offer a unique outpatient rehabilitation program specifically for people who have battled with and are recovering from COVID-19.
This program, created and carried out by trained physical and occupational therapists, will aim to improve strength, balance, endurance, activity tolerance, and overall functional mobility that may have been decreased or lost following a battle with COVID-19.
If you or someone you know has had a symptomatic battle with COVID-19 that has altered quality of life or independence due to the physical impact of the virus, please contact us to get started on your road to recovery. When the battle with COVID-19 ends, it is just the beginning of the recovery process for many.
How This Program Can Help:
  • Steadily increase endurance, activity tolerance, and strength with a personalized therapy plan without pushing the patient to extreme levels of fatigue or exhaustion
  • Keep a focus on functional tasks and daily activities such as bed mobility, transfers, and ambulation in order to improve limitations in daily life impacted by COVID-19
  • Improve breathing capabilities and lung capacity by educating and instructing proper breathing exercises and techniques
  • Closely monitor heart rate and oxygen levels at rest and while exercising
  • Provide safe and relevant home exercise programs to perform during "off days" from therapy services
  • Provide a safe and encouraging atmosphere where patients will feel comfortable exerting themselves in order to regain independence and quality of life.

The Rohingya people are an ethnic minority group from the Rakhine State of western Burma that has fled an ongoing genocide against them in Burma to Bangladesh. Newcomers Program – This is an ongoing social action by CBS that welcomes your help. CBS assists IPS families who are new to the United States and attend an IPS school to help acclimate them to American schools. Although their learning is currently virtual, the families still need basic items for their homes.  CBSs collects gently used clothing, household goods, toys, linens, personal hygiene items, and furniture. Fridays | 6:15 p.m. – Virtual Shabbat. Join Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation (IHC) for their weekly online service bringing the peace of Shabbat into homes. Nefesh Shabbat, a soulful musical Shabbat is always the third Friday of each month.
Saturdays | 9 a.m. – Torah Study Online. This weekly Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) study group is currently studying the weekly Torah portions. Led by IHC clergy, the group is guided through the text seeking understanding of the teaching for the time and discussing its message for today. While on Zoom, follow the weekly Torah portion. When in-person congregation is possible, IHC will continue moving through the entire Tanakh, line by line. The group study uses the English translation. No prior knowledge is necessary.
Wednesdays | 9:30 a.m. – Virtual Torah Talk with Rabbi Brett. Torah Talk is an informal, accessible, and interactive opportunity for adults of all levels of learning to discuss and study Judaism and its texts.
