It is almost impossible to emotionally experience the benefit our donations achieve, which is one of the main reasons we all don’t give more. It doesn’t feel like we are really saving a life or helping create a sustainable future for a family. But we are and that is why we have curated these nonprofits and made it easy, perhaps too easy to be believed, for all of us to do so much good.

I believe that most generous donors are not more caring or empathic than other people. But they are extremely generous and donate to the most effective charities regardless of where the beneficiaries live for two reasons.

• Unlike many people, they strongly believe that the money we raise really does reach the beneficiaries and does achieve the stated benefit.
• They maintain an image of the kind of person they want to be and what they do is likely necessary to justify that self-image.
