What a strange year it has been. Looking back & looking ahead.....
After several exhausting years of travel, and back to back exhibitions, the Stay at Home order in California this spring came as a bit of a welcome relief. I needed some time to rest, and to reflect.
2020 was the year I planned to release two new series in a big way. The year started with debuting my new series Somewhere Else at Photo LA, and in a solo exhibition at Foto Relevance Gallery in Houston, TX. Then, work from the series Somewhere Else went to the Spartanburg Art Museum and the social documentary project #countmein opened at the Museum of Art & History. Unfortunately, soon after my solo exhibit at Foto Relevance Gallery closed, covid shut downs began, and museums were forced to limit public access, or were closed altogether. While this was disappointing, the pandemic was going to change all of our lives, and I knew it was time to take a step back.
Though I miss connecting with my art world friends in person, I have been grateful for Zoom events that have helped me stay engaged. The slow down has given me a much needed break, and time to think about what comes next. As Los Angeles and much of the country endures yet another shut down, I continue to move forward in my creative endeavors, and have used this time to explore new materials and experiment.
I hope you are well, and able to find some joy in these strange times.
The exhibit #countmein was made possible with funding from the California Arts Council and the California Community Foundation. I was commissioned to make portraits of the people that live, work and visit the community surrounding the museum as a way to honor the residents of the area, and draw attention to the 2020 Census.
I am incredibly proud to share the museum has acquired 71 of the #countmein photographs for their permanent collection. The work will soon be installed at the newly redeveloped Lancaster Community Center which will be open to the public once public gatherings are safe again.
