AMS News

New AMS Website!
On December 16, 2020 a new website was launched for AMS. The aim of the website is to share different aspects of the AMS research community, such as the research member profiles, the research highlights and the five research programs. All five AMS research programs are presented with their program boards and research highlights, and all affiliated researchers. The website is a tool to showcase the cooperation between the different parties VU and Amsterdam UMC. Furthermore the annual reports are available to download, including the 2019 annual report. The website has an excellent search engine, if you are looking for experts on a specific topic. AMS researchers can present their research focus and highlights via their Pure profile where new publications are added automatically. An up-to-date personal page provides clear visibility for you as AMS researcher and should help others find you.

All AMS researchers asked to please  complete or update your personal profile via Pure. Amsterdam UMC researchers can visit intranet for information about how to get started with Pure. If there are queries about your personal page, please contact the web team of Amsterdam UMC. Note that an incomplete personal page on the website is due to an incomplete profile in Pure, and the system needs 24 hours to update any profile changes. VU researchers can find instructions for managing their Pure profile on the VU website. For Pure related questions, VU researchers can contact the UBVU PURE support.

Can medication for burn patients be useful for COVID-19 sufferers?
Paul van Zuijlen of the Burn Center in Beverwijk is investigating whether a medication for burn patients can also be used to treat Covid-19 patients. This involves alkaline phosphatase, which reduces the risk of inflammation in burn patients. In order to "balance" the immune system of burn patients and minimize the risk of complications, they are given alkaline phosphatase. Read more on the AMS website.

NWO Take-off Grant for Richard Jaspers

The Take-off grant has been awarded for the project 'Sound Tomics'. Imaging and measuring organs and anatomical structures is of great importance for adequate diagnosis and to be able to follow effects of treatments. To do this properly in the case of muscles, the availability of a 3D image is important. This is possible with MRI, but apart from the fact that this technique is too expensive for a physiotherapist, there is also a limitation in the position in which it can be measured. Read more abut this on the AMS website.

NWO Take-off Grant for David Mann

The development of athletes in team sports can be accelerated by the use of virtual training tools. These training tools are especially promising for the improvement of tactical skills. In this project a virtual 3D room (VROOM) is developed to enable tactical training within soccer by using an extended reality (XR) training tool that displays soccer situations in a 3D space. The VROOM tracks the position of the soccer player and has custom algorithms that allow computer-generated avatars to interact with the athlete in real time, thus providing an interactive individualized learning environment.
