Letter of Gratitude from the PTA

Dear Abernethy Community,

As 2020 draws to a close, we wanted to take a few moments to express our gratitude to each of you. The hardships of 2020 have been unrelenting for all of us in some way, shape, or form. We continue to be inspired by all the resilience, the stamina, and the  continued generosity you all have shown throughout this school year.

The isolation that we all find ourselves in under Covid restrictions offers us the time to reflect on what generosity means. Generosity often equates to financial contributions in our culture, but as we continue our time in lockdown we start to see and feel what generosity of time means when we share it with another person. We have started to see what generosity of self means to one’s self through health and wellness and balance. And we can see what generosity to the community means.

As leaders of our PTA community we want to thank all of you who have been generous with your self, your time and/or your efforts this year. No single mode of generosity is privileged over another and no single mode is preferred. As a community of individuals when we take the time to pause and remind ourselves that each of us has talents to put forth, we can transform challenges into opportunities in the way that some of our most exciting learning journeys are the ones that begin in the discomfort of not knowing the answer. We don’t know what 2021 will bring, but we do know that we will remain rooted in our connections with one another so that together we can rise to the challenges presented to us as we help our children grow and reach new heights in their own resilience, inquiry, and self development.

Some highlights of our community efforts the past two months:

  • Our recent November community meeting focused on the mental health of our students. Our panel of experts shared strategies to prevent undue stress or burnout among our students, parents, and/or caregivers. We plan to continue more on this topic in Spring 2021 community meetings.

  • Approximately 150 families participated in the Annual Appeal with the Virtual Green Envelopes with no financial requirement for participation and virtual Chinook books gifted to anyone who completed the google form.

  • Continuing in our mission to promote a healthy and positive teaching and learning environment for our children, for the teaching and non-teaching staff members of the school, and for all of our families, we recently awarded mini grants that allow us to share $5000 across 8 programs. All of these programs will directly benefit our learners and our families in the community and range from 3rd Grade mysteries for the library to social emotional curriculum and classroom materials to 1st Grade BIPOC readers to Virtual Writing Festival this Spring.

  • $3,200 in donations for the Groceries for Grout program, supporting SE families with weekly food boxes.

Thank you Abernethy community for all that you give and share and provide to our school, to our children and to each other.  We hope everyone has a restful academic break and that you are able to enjoy your holiday season however you choose to celebrate in a safe and healthy manner.

Sincerely,

Rose Caudillo - President

Hanna Nesper Newell - President
Paul Coleman - Vice President
