Coatham Dunes event report

What a glorious day's orienteering! Huge thanks to Paul Taylor for an excellent map of a highly technical little area and to Charles Mayes for the really interesting courses. We do need some fun this year ....... and we certainly had some today. Even the weather was really kind to us.

I’d like to thank everyone involved in the fantastic team effort that went into bringing today's event to life ....... including Joan, Paul, Wendy, Charles, Duncan, Pippa, Joe, James and Alastair. And thanks to all of you who came out today to try out this new map and these fun courses. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. Full results can be found here.

Have a Merry --- and safe! --- Christmas, and we'll look forward to seeing you at some orienteering events next year.

CLOK junior coaching and North East Junior Squad

Many juniors (or parents of juniors!) will know we already aim to organise coaching sessions for CLOK juniors, run by Neil Hunter and Charles Mayes. Sadly these have taken a bit of a back seat during 2020, but hopefully they'll be back next year. Any juniors who haven't previously got involved, and who are interested, including any new families, do get in touch with Neil Hunter (email) or Charles Mayes (email).

Beyond the CLOK junior sessions, for those who would like to take their training and potential competitions to a higher level there is the North East Junior Squad (NEJS) for north east clubs (CLOK, NN, NATO). This is one of several Junior Regional Orienteering Squads (collectively JROS). NEJS organises training sessions, sometimes further afield such as at Malham and the Lake District, and sometimes teamed up with a neighbouring squad like Yorkshire & Humberside. There are also summer training camps put on by JROS (see Liam Green's report on the Lagganlia training camp here), and there is normally a weekend at Hawkshead (Lakes) for M/W16s. The highlight of the junior squad year is the Junior Inter Regional Competition (JIRC), when all 12 regional squads compete at a weekend event combining individual races in M/W14, M/W16 and M/W18 classes, overnight accommodation, and a relay race on the Sunday. The 2021 JIRCs are due to be hosted by CLOK in September (Covid permitting).

Again after a period of quiet in 2020, we are trying to get NEJS going again to hopefully create a strong team to compete in the 2021 JIRCs competition. As part of this - subject to Covid restrictions - we are hoping to run a training session on 30th or 31st Jan at Sewing Shields (near Hadrian's Wall). If you are interested in NEJS or want to know more please get in touch with myself, John Green (email) or Kim Sanderson the NEJS coordinator (email) know. We can share more details of our plans and activities.
