Dear <<First Name>>
I would like to acknowledge the support I have received and the work done by the members of the Queensland State Committee. The Committee is a diverse group with some experienced surgeons and a number of younger surgeons, nine members reside outside Brisbane and pleasingly we have a number of female members. This coupled with our six College Counsellors including the Vice President enables the Committee to draw on our combined experience and influence. I wish you all a happy festive season and we'll communicate with you in the new year on array of activities. Recently, we held a Surgical Directors meeting at the College and it was well attended by Regional Directors. Two of the presentations on the evening were on Mortality and Morbidity Audits and the Save Our Surgical Services (Regional Services). Details on these excellent presentations are below.

Mortality and Morbidity Audits

The College's Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Research, Audit and Academic Surgery Guideline reference document for conducting effective Morbidity and Mortality meetings for Improved Patient Care provides sound advice on running effective M&M meetings. Added to this is the recently released NSW Guidelines for Conducting and Reporting Morbidity and Mortality/Clinical Review Meetings 2020. The major takeaway from these two documents are:

How should an M&M meeting be run:
  • A written charter or terms of reference, to clearly define the goals of the meeting
  • A structured meeting format
  • An agenda distributed prior to the meeting
  • A structured process for case identification
  • Multidisciplinary involvement
  • A regular schedule
  • Dedicated M&M personnel
  • Self-nomination of cases, including anonymously
Appropriate Outcomes for an M&M meeting
  • Recommendations for individual/systems improvement made for each case
  • A timeline and follow-up on recommendations for improvement, in order to ensure recommendations identified at M&M meetings are adequately implemented.
  • A dedicated individual/group to implement recommendations for improvement, and provide regular updates on the progression of their tasks.
  • Detailed records of M&M outcomes, to allow for review and meaningful follow-up of recommended changes to local practice.

2021 course registrations

We are pleased to announce that registrations for 2021 Skills Training courses, scheduled for January through to June, will shortly be opening for registrations.

The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) is committed to ensuring that participant's health and safety is the top priority of running any event, which includes adhering to any local, state, and federal laws, policies and restrictions, both in Australia and New Zealand. Due to the complex evolving nature of these laws and restrictions, RACS may be required to cancel a course at any time leading up to the event.

SET Trainees, SIMGs and participants previously registered to a cancelled course will have a priority window for
2021 course registrations.

RACS ASC 2021 Local Hubs

With the uncertainty of restrictions on gatherings, the 2021 ASC will be a hybrid event.

We envisage running the traditional ASC at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre with the maximum participants allowed. Supporting the Congress at the MCEC, the ASC will be live-streamed and on-demand to all those unable to travel and attend.

Local hubs will be formed in major cities and regions in Australia and New Zealand, and other countries, to watch the ASC. Further details coming soon.
