San Carlos Weather Forecast


Wednesday will be partly cloudy, Thursday will be cloudy and the rest of the week will be mostly sunny. The daytime temps will be between 24 - 25 C (76 - 78 F), and night time temperatures will be between 10 - 11 C (50 - 52 F). 

Unfortunately, the forecast is for wind and waves Thursday afternoon (Christmas Eve), so the Christmas lighted boat parade is cancelled for that evening.

Together Against Cancer

Yacht Club Parade of Lights, December 24 - Cancelled / Postponed


The Yacht Club Parade of Lights is cancelled on Christmas Eve because high winds and waves are predicted. 

However, the Yacht Club members are discussing whether they will postpone the parade to a later date...possibly Saturday, December 26. Keep an eye on What's Up San Carlos' Facebook Forum for updates.

If the parade is rescheduled, it will start at sunset in the Bahia. They will follow a route that will take them past Isla San Nicholas to enter the Posada Beach bay. The first viewing point will be El Mar and La Palapa Griega restaurants where the boats are scheduled to make two passes by circling in the bay.

The boats will then parade towards Charly’s Rock traveling in the channel of the shore side of Honeymoon Island. The boats will turn towards shore and pass along San Francisco beach. They will then look for the last bonfire on the beach before turning out to sea. All the boats will be making a large turn back towards Charly’s Rock and again will travel along the beach. The fleet will then be turning out to sea at Charley’s Rock for the return parade back to the Bahia.

Other News Around Town

COVID-19 updates for Guaymas, Sonora & Mexico


In Guaymas / San Carlos, as of yesterday, there were 2,144 cases (49 new cases last week), and 229 deaths (4 last week). There were 227 new cases in Sonora yesterday (14 in Guaymas / San Carlos). Of the 48.320 confirmed cases in Sonora, 35,995  have recovered, 3,738 died and 513 are hospitalized (up from 436 last week. 315 serious and 100 on ventilators).

Sonora Hospital Occupancy. The Secretary of Health of Sonora reported this Monday that there are no COVID beds available in private hospitals in Hermosillo and public hospitals in Sonora are at imminent risk of saturation (spaces at the Ministry of Health are at 82%, Issste at 77%, IMSS at 71% and Isssteson at 100%).

For the 2 weeks beginning December 21, Sonora remains in "orange" according to Mexico’s four-color semáforo, or traffic light, Coronavirus rating system. Sonora is on alert that it's approaching red.

Today, Mexico had 12,511 new cases and 897 deaths for a total of 1,338,426 confirmed cases (996,302 have recovered and 222,629 are active) and 119,495 deceased.

Vaccine in Mexico. Mexico's Minister of Health announced yesterday that a shipment of 1,419,659 doses of Pfizer's vaccine against COVID-19 will soon arrive in Mexico from Pfizer's plant in Belgium. Specific details of distribution have not yet been announced.

The use of face masks is mandatory in public and “common use” spaces. For example, in restaurants, it is mandatory to wear a mask upon entry and when moving inside the establishment, only removing the mask to drink and eat.

Border travel restrictions continue through January 21, 2020. The travel restrictions have been in place since March 21 and apply to non-essential land traffic to and from the US and Mexico and the US and Canada. Mexico does not seem to be enforcing the restrictions, and US citizens have been able to drive across the border.

SBPA 2021 Non-Event Calendars


The 2021 SBPA Non-Event Calendars have arrived and are colorful, adorable, funny and fun.

Many of you will recognize Ray Mahoney's great artistic talent on this poster. She is one of those rare geniuses who combines talent and a sense of humor.

Like all of us, Ray had annoying lockdown experiences -- she captured those in a series of cartoons created with "tongue in cheek" from the viewpoint of local dogs and cats. Ray generously donated 15 pieces of her artwork to bring the 2021 SBPA Non-Event Calendar to life.  

This calendar gives you lots of space for your daily notes since no events have been finalized for 2021.

The calendar can be yours for a donation of 300 pesos or $15 US. Every calendar will pay for one spay/neuter surgery in 2021.

They are available at the Altered Tails Book Shoppe every Thursday and Saturday until they are all sold. Several people are also selling them: Christina Hoell, Veronica Hadley, Debbie Wild, Buffy Anderson and Carole Pierce.

The San Carlos Foundation would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays. We look forward to a healthy and productive New Year as we roll into 2021. While this year has been quite unusual with COVID and isolating, many have still put their best foot forward to keep San Carlos alive and well. Kudos to all those who helped with food distributions, children's tutoring, continual clean-ups around the town, the Dolphin project, median adoptions on our main street Beltrones and so much more. Our little town never stopped showing its kindness and dedication in many ways.

The Foundation is gearing up once again to begin projects as soon as possible. We are scheduling planning time to discuss new projects and complete others that were in the forefront when COVID began. We are excited to announce that work will continue on the Beltrones palm tree cleanup. For 500 pesos, a tree can be cleaned and trunk painted. A minimum of 10 trees must be funded for a work order. Maybe a group of friends could accomplish this! 

We also want to continue working towards re-establishing the Fountain which is the heart of the town. More information on this will be coming out in the near future. There are still more bus stops to be repaired and painted, as well as maintenance work on the median between Tortuga's restaurant and the Mini-market. You can be part of the solution!

Fishing Report
The fishing is starting to pick up again. A few nice yellowtail were caught around the Seamounts on Tuesday. It was pretty slow last week, mainly because I believe that there was so much bait around. Metabolism starts to slow a bit when the water is cooler, sometimes compressing the bite times. Sometimes you just have to be there at the right time.

We were at the Island on Sunday by ourselves and the fish were boiling over a square kilometer. I have never seen so many!

We did alright bottom fishing a few days before for some nice Whitefish and triggerfish. That evening the mackerel and herring came in thick. The bait is everywhere out there at times, and I mark the fish but they aren't biting. As the full moon approaches, they will bite somewhere and sometime this week!

The craft beer revolution finally comes to San Carlos, as the only LOCALLY BREWED craft beer debuts at Marvida Taproom & Kitchen.
