Learn about CCATE’s Podcast & Filmmaking Circle!
In the fall of 2019, CCATE initiated the Podcast Circle, led by Obed Arango, in which high school students write about current themes that are meaningful to them. Topics such as legislative reform, white privilege, and the immigrant experience have all been explored. The group has continued meeting on Zoom during the pandemic interviewing:
The Consul of Mexico, Carlos Obrador, about services available during the pandemic for the Mexican population in the tri-state area,
Mexican dramaturgist, Silvia Ortega Vettoretti, about her artistic journey and how writers are capturing the pandemic in Mexico, and
Mexican journalist, Carlos Martínez, about the state of the pandemic in Mexico City and condition of the workers.
The group’s current focus is a documentary film project that addresses educational challenges during COVID-19 and is generously being supported by Independence Public Media, Inc. During the late summer into early fall, the group gathered outside on the gardens of CCATE, keeping distanced and learning how to use cameras & other equipment. As the pandemic has worsened, the group has been meeting online since early November. Weekly collaborators include Vettoretti, who connects from Mexico City, and two CCATE interns, Caitlin Dick from the University of Pennsylvania and Erin Drebushenko from Ursinus College.
The circle plans to complete the documentary in Summer of 2021 and share it widely with community members, local media outlets, and various film festivals. Click below to support this inspired group and the production of their documentary!
