Brevard County Emergency Management will use the Nixle Alert emergency notification system to announce appointment opportunities as they arise, and based on supply availability, for COVID-19 vaccinations.
Currently, there are no appointments available for vaccines administered by the Florida Department of Health-Brevard. However, when supplies are available, residents will be notified by press release, on social media and via alerts that you can receive on your mobile phone from the Nixle notification system. To register for text alerts, simply create a new text message on your mobile phone to 888777 and in the text message body write Brevardeoc, and hit send.

The City’s contractor continues to work, including the rebuilding of the westbound lane of West Central Boulevard. The work also includes the replacement of a sanitary sewer line and construction of a pedway along the northern side of the roadway. The initial phase of work includes closing the westbound lane to traffic; the eastbound lane will be two-way traffic for the foreseeable future. The work area includes West Central Boulevard from SR A1A to Thurm Boulevard and will include the construction of streetscape amenities similar to Ridgewood and North Atlantic Avenues.
A number of residents have contacted the City regarding groundwater being discharged to the stormwater system by the dewatering system. Due to high sulfur and organic contents, the groundwater has an odor similar to “rotten eggs”. A sample of the discharge water was collected and analyzed at the City’s WRF Laboratory. Results indicated no fecal coliforms above laboratory detection limits. A high fecal coliform count would indicate a sewer leak. However, the City’s contractor made a number of changes to the dewatering system to address this issue; City Staff will monitor the situation and make further improvements as necessary to control the odor.

CAPE CANAVERAL COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY TO OFFER SIGN ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES
Small business success is a key component of a successful and vibrant community. Therefore, in an effort to increase local business awareness, economic productivity, and aesthetics within the City, the Cape Canaveral Community Redevelopment Agency is launching a Small Business Sign Assistance program to incentivize certain small business owners to improve business signage by replacing existing older and outdated signage that is not only more aesthetically attractive for the residents and visitors, but to increase their brand exposure and improve the chances of attracting new and repeat clientele.
Subject to the terms and conditions of the Program, Grant awards will be considered on a first come, first served basis - based on a completed application, with reimbursement up to 50% of the cost of the new signage, and a maximum allocation up to $5,000 per applicant and property.
The City has begun accepting applications for this program.

Florida Department of Transportation Tentative Five-Year Work Program
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) invites you to a virtual public hearing regarding the Tentative Five-Year Work Program for fiscal years 2021/2022 through 2025/2026, beginning Monday, January 11, 2021 and ending Friday, January 15, 2021 for 24 hours each day.
The purpose of the tentative work program is to provide direction on where and when to build transportation system improvements, and is used to forecast funds needed for improvements across all modes of transportation including: roadway, bicycle, pedestrian, freight, trails, transit, aviation, seaports and spaceports. This tentative work program provides proposed transportation projects for the nine (9) counties that form FDOT District Five: which includes Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia counties and includes Florida's Turnpike Enterprise projects in these counties. The public hearing is being held to present information and receive community feedback.
The Department is offering multiple ways for the community to participate in the hearing. All participants, regardless of the platform they choose, will be presented with the same information as seen on the website.
- Virtual Option: Interested persons may join the Virtual Public Hearing (VPH) from a computer, tablet or mobile device. A VPH is a free live presentation or webinar over the internet. This online hearing will be open and available 24 hours a day for citizens to view and comment on project information at www.d5wpph.com.
- In-Person Appointment: FDOT representatives are available during this week at the FDOT District Five Office, located at the address below. You can schedule a meeting at the district office by calling (386) 943-5499 or by email to D5-WPPH@dot.state.fl.us.
- In-Person Open House Option: Participants may attend an in-person open house on Thursday, January 14, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. by going to the FDOT District Five Office, located at 719 South Woodland Boulevard, DeLand, FL 32720. The Department requests advance registration for this option to ensure all attendees are accommodated safely and according to social distancing guidelines. To register for the in-person option, please call (386) 943-5499 or email D5-WPPH@dot.state.fl.us. Attendees will be asked to follow all safety and sanitation guidelines as well as adhere to any local ordinances. Potential attendees who are not feeling well should not attend the in-person hearing.

- Multi-Generational Facility (MGF) – Weekly updates of construction progress and significant milestones will be outlined here. Information will also be posted on the MGF specific page on the City webpage and can be viewed on the City's Projects page.
- W+J secured footprint of area that will first be addressed during construction.
- Trees specified for removal were tagged.
- Staff removed basketball hoops, benches and trashcans from construction area as well as located and painted reuse, sewer and electrical located underground throughout the park.
- Preconstruction meeting took place on January 8, 2021 discussing all aspects of the project.
- Staff replenished the clay at Canaveral City Park’s Little League field. Running lanes and infield were cut and the field was refreshed for the upcoming Little League season. It was a lot of work, but the field looks amazing.
- Staff repainted the lines on the Pickleball courts over the holiday break. All Leagues took two weeks off to celebrate the holidays, so Staff got busy in making huge improvements to the courts. Players have shown great appreciation for the new bright colored lines and enjoy playing at the Nancy Hanson Recreation Complex! Looking to learn how to play Pickleball? Join a group of Pickleballers on Monday and Wednesday mornings at the Nancy Hanson Recreation Complex. No need to bring equipment!
- Mixed Doubles Pickleball resumed its season after having the past two weeks off. Teams will play one more regular season match before entering the Playoff Tournament. The top four teams from the regular season will make up Division 1 in the Playoff Tournament, while the bottom four teams make up Division 2. Teams will compete within their division for a chance at winning the Championship for the inaugural season of Mixed Doubles Pickleball in Cape Canaveral.
- Kickball players returned to the field Wednesday night for the final matchups of the regular season. All five teams will make the playoff bracket with a chance to move their way into the Championship match. Playoffs will take place over the next two weeks at Canaveral City Park. Currently B.O.A.F. leads all teams with an undefeated 8-0 record. They have locked up the number one seed in the playoffs.
- Monday Night Tennis is nearing the end of the season. Gary leads all players with an 7-0 record. Players will have one week to make up any matches before beginning the Playoff Tournament.
- Registration is open for many Cape Canaveral athletic leagues! Sign up online to reserve your spot in the upcoming season!

Annual Community Sea Oats Planting
The humble and unassuming sea oat is arguably one of the most important plants on the barrier island as they are critical to the wellbeing and stability of our vital sand dunes. Once mature, the root structures of these plants act as rebar would in a concrete building, stabilizing dunes and holding them in place during storm surge and coastal flooding events. They also help to catch wind driven sand, building the dune system higher over time. Since 2005, volunteers and City Staff have planted over 100,000 sea oats on Cape Canaveral beaches.
On Saturday, January 30 between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., the City + volunteers will plant an incredible 20,000 sea oats; doubling last year's count. We need all the volunteers we can get to help, no sign-up necessary, just show up! Hope to see you then!

Brevard County Launches 'Resilient Brevard' Project on Climate Change
The Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department has launched “Resilient Brevard,” a project to develop proactive strategies, policies, and a plan of action to increase resilience to the impacts of climate change. “Resilient Brevard” seeks to identify coastal vulnerabilities and provide local policy recommendations to minimize and mitigate the effects of flooding, storm surge, and sea level rise. The project, launched by Brevard County and the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council (ECFRPC), is focused on five general areas:
- Economic resilience
- Public services & safety
- Resilient development
- Public health and equity
- Resilient nature-base practices
The County would like your input on creating an economically and environmentally resilient community!
- What about the quality of life in Brevard County matters most to you?
- What are the impacts of climate on your quality of life?
- What are the vulnerabilities we need to prepare for over the next 50-75 years?
- What are the most appropriate proactive strategies to make our community more resilient?

2021 SustainaWhat? Series
Throughout the 2021 calendar year, the City will be releasing monthly community outreach sessions in a virtual webisode series called, SustainaWhat? This series will mostly explore environmental, resilience, and sustainability-based topics relating to the City of Cape Canaveral, as well as other important issues such as hurricane preparedness and the latest happenings involving the revitalized space program. Each webisode will be facilitated by either a City Staff member or a guest speaker relevant to the webisode’s topic.
Each webisode session will be one-hour long, and will be posted for public viewing on the City’s website and other media channels the last Thursday of every month. Should any of the sessions be cancelled or their topics changed a new flyer will be made available as soon as possible with up-to-date information.

Lagoon Update
According to the Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Program, 37 projects have been completed as of 2020 in the Save Our Lagoon Plan. These projects have reduced/removed over 39,000 pounds of excess nitrogen annually from the Indian River Lagoon system. One such project was even in the City, a new and improved second generation baffle box completed in December 2017 on West Central Blvd that helps to remove debris from stormwater runoff.
There are 15 projects currently under construction that will reduce over 135,000 pounds of nitrogen. Additionally, there are 35 projects under design and permitting that will reduce over 393,000 pounds of nitrogen annually. This year's Save Our Lagoon Plan update, which is expected to go before the Board of County Commissioners for approval in February, is recommending adding an additional 35 projects totaling over 32,000 pounds of annual nitrogen removal. When complete the plan will reduce over 1.2 million pounds of nitrogen annually.

Adopt-A-Mangrove Program
The City of Cape Canaveral has established the Adopt-A-Mangrove Program to provide interested property owners with the opportunity to “adopt” Mangroves. This is a voluntary program that will assist with the planting and care of these important plants, which serve a critical role in the health and well-being of the Indian and Banana River Lagoon systems. Rules and guidelines must be met and followed by interested Mangrove “Adopters” who wish to partake in this volunteer community outreach initiative before planting on one’s property can begin. These guidelines are meant to ensure resident safety, City Code and state compliance and local environmental. Not meeting any one of the following can result in the refusal of participation by City Staff. Please read the Adopt-A-Mangrove Program Guide for further information linked below. Only those with properties that directly border the lagoon or a waterway connected to the lagoon are eligible for this program. Registration to receive a Mangrove begins today, Monday, January 11 and ends Friday, March 26. City of Cape Canaveral Adopt-A-Mangrove Packet Mangroves are a critical aspect of Florida’s marine ecosystems. Sometimes called the “kidneys of the coast,” Mangroves filter water they are situated in and can maintain water quality that helps coral reefs and near shore seagrasses grow. Due to their dense root structures, Mangroves also help to stabilize coastlines by reducing shoreline erosion, decreasing incoming wave energy, minimizing storm surge heights and potentially providing a wind break. This program falls in line with the City’s goal of planting 300 new Mangroves on its lagoon shoreline within five years.
