Retrospektive. Wir danken für ein spannendes erstes Jahr!

Danke. Danke ist unser Wort des Jahres 2020 mit all seinen Turbulenzen. Doppelt hält besser. Und somit feierten wir gleich zweimal die Eröffnung des Oyouns. Jede Auflage und Planänderung brachte uns dazu neue (digitale) Wege zu suchen und zu finden um BIPoC Künstler*innen eine Plattform zu bieten. Im Herbst waren unsere Räume voller Begeisterung und Durst nach Live-Erlebnissen. Unser erstes Festival “Kartografien des Affektes - im queer und jetzt” hat alle unsere Erwartungen übertroffen - ein 10-tägiges Festival, an dem mehr als 40 Künstler*innen teilnahmen und Narrativen der queeren Geschichte und des (gegenwärtigen) Widerstands nachzeichneten, mit dem Ziel, transnationale Solidarität zu schaffen. Thank you. Thank you is our word of the year 2020 - with all its ups and downs. Somethings just need repeating and so we celebrated the opening of Oyoun twice! Every iteration and change of plans meant we had to search for and find new (digital) ways to offer BIPoC artists a platform. In autumn our spaces were full of enthusiasm and a thirst for live experiences. Our first festival, "In the queer and now - Cartographies of Affect", exceeded all our expectations - it was a 10-day festival with more than 40 artists involved, tracing narratives of queer history and (contemporary) resistance, with the aim of creating transnational solidarity. A short video summary of some of the highlights is now online: check it out.

Wir danken allen Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen, die dieses Jahr im Oyoun mitgewirkt haben. Wir danken allen Besucher*innen und Stream-Zuschauer*innen. Wir danken dem Oyoun Beirat für die begleitenden, reflektierenden und empowernden Gespräche. Wir danken der Zivilgesellschaft für die Kollaborationen und Inspiration, der Nachbarschaft und dem Oyoun Gartenkollektiv. Wir danken dem Team, dem Curators* Lab, unseren Partner*innen und Supporter*innen.

Wir denken an die Menschen, die dafür kämpfen, dass Kunst und Kultur als überlebensrelevant gesehen wird. Wir denken an die Menschen, die jeden Tag in Krankenhäusern gegen Corona kämpfen. Wir denken an all die anderen großen und kleinen Kämpfe gegen Repressionen und für eine sichere, gesunde und gerechte Welt für alle. Gemeinsam vereinen wir uns im Widerstand und stehen hier zuletzt den Corona Leugner*innen, den Spaßverderber*innen, den Rechten und den Verschwörungstheoretiker*innen, den Dieter Nuhrs oder Terre des Femmes gegenüber.

Die Sounds, die uns in diesem Jahr gestärkt und geprägt haben teilen wir mit euch. In einer Playliste haben wir eine Auswahl an Beats zusammengetragen, die 2020 im Oyoun performt, aufgelegt oder gestreamt wurden, sowie Musik, die die Oyounfamilie in diesem Jahr begleitet hat. Hört rein bei Spotify und lasst uns - wenn auch aus der Ferne - gemeinsam das Jahr mit schönen Klängen aus dem Oyoun ausklingen.

We want to thank all the artists and curators who have been involved with Oyoun projects this year - all the visitors and stream viewers as well. Thank you to the Oyoun Advisory Board for the accompanying, reflective and empowering conversations. Thank you to civil society groups for the collaborations and inspiration, thank you to our neighbours and the Oyoun Garden Collective. Thank you to our team, the Curators* Lab, our partners*and supporters.

We are thinking of everyone who is fighting for art and culture to be seen as “system-relevant”. We are thinking of the people who are fighting Corona every day in hospitals. We are thinking of all the struggles, big and small, against repression or for a safe, healthy and just world for all. Together we stand, united in resistance. Last in line are the Corona deniers, the fun spoilers, the right-leaning and the conspiracy theorists, the Dieter Nuhrs or the Terre des Femmes.

We want to share the sounds that have strengthened and shaped us this year with you. We have compiled a selection of beats that were performed, played or streamed at Oyoun in 2020, as well as music that accompanied the Oyoun family. Wir freuen uns, ankündigen zu können, dass unser erster kuratorischer Schwerpunkt EMBODIED TEMPORALITIES mit dem EMBODIED ARTS FESTIVAL im Frühling 2021 seinen Höhepunkt finden wird - mit Arbeiten u.a. von Sujatro Ghosh, Sana Rizvi, Nane Kahle, Gugulethu Duma, Exocé Kasongo, Dr. Maiada Aboud, Cornelia & Kerim Becker, Avril Unger und Ahmad Hijazi. Dieser Aufruf richtet sich an Künstler*innen der BIPoC-Community (Einzelpersonen oder Duos), die sich mit ihrer eigenen Verarbeitung von Ahnen-Technologie, mit verkörperter Erinnerung in der Aufführungspraxis, im Aktivismus und in der Kulturarbeit beschäftigen. Von besonderem Interesse sind Reflexionen, die soziale und Ahnengespräche auf neuartige Weise einbeziehen und reflektieren, sowie andere Ansätze zu Futurismus, Modernität, Bewahrung und Beschwörung.  ...weiterlesen

Ascension –  intimate bodies forbidden stories  | Dr. Maiada Aboud
Dieser Aufruf lädt Kämpferinnen* ein, für Ascension vorzusprechen - ein Theaterstück über die geheimnisvollen Aspekte von Weiblichkeit und Menstruation. Das Stück zielt darauf ab, die Teilnehmerinnen* in ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt einzubinden, um über Fragen der Gleichberechtigung und des sozialen Wandels zu reflektieren. We are pleased to be able to announce our first curatorial focus EMBODIED TEMPORALITIES will culminate with the EMBODIED ARTS FESTIVAL in April 2021 with works from Sujatro Ghosh, Sana Rizvi, Nane Kahle, Gugulethu Duma, Exocé Kasongo, Dr. Maiada Aboud, Cornelia & Kerim Becker, Avril Unger, and Ahmad Hijazi. The works will deal with themes like collective and communicative power, indigenous knowledge and ritual release, queerness and community building, diaspora and futurism, gender and femininity, taboos and marginalisation, trauma and violence, identity and heritage, memories and remembrance, healing and detoxification. This call is aimed at artists - BIPoC individuals and collectives - working on their own processing of ancestral technology, of embodied memory in performance practice, activism, and cultural work. Of particular interest are reflections that engage in and reflect on social and ancestral conversations in novel ways, as well as other approaches to futurism, modernity, preservation, and invocation. ...read more.

Ascension – intimate bodies forbidden stories | Dr. Maiada Aboud
This call invites womxn fighters to audition for Ascension, a play about the secretive aspects of femininity and menstruation. The play aims at engaging participants with a community project in order to reflect on equal rights issues and social change. Ammar Obeid und ein Jahr zur japanisch-arabischen Affäre - Ammar Obeid ist Erzähler und Filmemacher, fließend in diversen Sprachen, neben Englisch und Deutsch auch Arabisch und Japanisch. Er studierte Japanologie in Syrien und arbeitet seitdem zu den Parallelen beider Kulturen. Im Rahmen eines Fellowships verbrachte Ammar das ganze Jahr 2020 damit Musik zu produzieren, Texte zu schreiben und Geschichten zu reflektieren. 

Al-Bab ist eine romantische Science Fiction-Geschichte. Das titelgebende Tor ist eine Art Wurmloch, das über die Zeiten hinweg die Räume einer japanischen Geisha in Kyoto des Jahres 1720 mit dem Zimmer einer ägyptischen Sexarbeiterin in Kairo genau 300 Jahre später verbindet. Die Ausstellung im Oktober 2020 präsentierte die ersten Beispiele eines Graphic Novels, welches im Frühling 2021 erhältlich sein wird.

Wir danken Ammar für die Zusammenarbeit und freuen uns, seine großartigen Arbeiten weiterhin im Oyoun ausstellen zu können. Das Fellowship wurde gefördert von der Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa (Weltoffenes Berlin).

Ammar Obeid and a year on Japanese-Arab connections - Ammar Obeid is a storyteller and filmmaker, fluent in various languages: Arabic and Japanese in addition to English and German. He studied Japanese in Syria and has since worked on the parallels between the two cultures. As part of a fellowship, Ammar spent all of 2020 producing music, writing lyrics, and reflecting on stories. 

Al-Bab is a romantic science fiction story. The titular gateway is a kind of wormhole that connects across time the rooms of a Japanese geisha in Kyoto in 1720 with the room of an Egyptian sex worker in Cairo exactly 300 years later. The October 2020 exhibition presented the first examples of a graphic novel, which will be available from Spring 2021.

We thank Ammar for his collaboration and look forward to continuing to exhibit his great work at Oyoun. The Fellowship was funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe (Weltoffenes Berlin).

„Was bedeutet Self Care für dich?” - Mit dieser Frage setzten sich die Lockdown Residency Künstler*innen und Kulturschaffende des Oyoun Curators* Labs auseinander. Ob künstlerisch, kulturell, psychosozial oder sozioökonomisch - mit der Fragestellung bieten wir die Plattform, losgelöst von Rahmen und Form(at)en, zu agieren. Die Dokumentation der künstlerischen Prozesse und Beiträge von 20+ Künstler*innen (siehe Namen unten) wird als Vernissage am 23. Januar 2021 auf oyoun.de präsentiert.  ....weitere Infos

"What does Self Care mean to you?" - artists and creatives from the Oyoun Curators* Lab have been addressing this question in a Lockdown Residency. Whether artistic, cultural, psychosocial or socio-economic responces - we wanted to offer a platform to (re)act and create, free from set rules and specific form(at)s. The documentation of the artistic processes and contributions of 20+ artists (see list of names above) will be presented on oyoun.de on 23rd January 2021. ...more info (in German)

10 Künstler*innen aus unserem Curators* Lab nehmen zur Zeit an unserer Takeover Initiative teil. Die Workshopreihe ist letzte Woche zum Ende gekommen, jetzt geht’s weiter damit gemeinsame Projekte zu erdenken und entwickeln. Ein Raum, in dem antidisziplinär gedacht und geschaffen werden kann, Austausch und Auseinandersetzung mit der künstlerischen Arbeit der anderen möglich ist und wir gemeinsam existieren. Der “Curators* Lab Takeover” wird in den nächsten Monaten weiter erarbeitet und die Ergebnisse im März 2021 präsentiert.

10 artists from our Curators* Lab are currently participating in our Takeover Initiative. The workshop series ended last week, now we continue to think about and develop projects together. A space to think and create in an anti-disciplinary way, to exchange and engage with each other's artistic work, and to exist together. The "Curators* Lab Takeover" will be further detailed in the next months and the results will be presented in March 2021.

Oyoun freut sich, Cult' Sup' 6th Edition - eine virtuelle Reise im Dezember zu präsentieren. Cult' Sup' (Culture Supply) ist eine Untersuchung der afrikanischen Kulturen, der Afro-Nachfahren, der Afro-Futurismus-Kultur und natürlich der Welt: "Das Konzept ist es, afro-verwurzelte Kunst, Musik, Malerei, Fotografie, Tanz, Poesie, jede Art von Ausstellung, Storytelling, Mode, Wissen und jede Art von künstlerischer Performance zu teilen. Unser Ziel ist es, verschiedene Gemeinschaften miteinander zu verbinden und immer daran zu erinnern, dass wir alle eins sind und vom selben Ort kommen. Zusammenkommen durch das Medium der Kunst und des Wissens." Dies ist die erste Ausgabe von Cult' Sup', die online veröffentlicht wird - eine andere Art, das Publikum in Zeiten von Corona zu erreichen. Jede Woche stellen wir einen von vier Teilen vor: 'Roots Connection' mit Dumama & Kechou, 'Sooth moves Smooth' mit Katerinha und 'Open Wound' mit Nane Kahle sind bisher erschienen und morgen folgt 'The Artist's Womb before a Goodbye' mit Thomias Radin.

Oyoun is happy to present Cult‘Sup‘s 6th Edition – a virtual Journey throughout December. Cult’ Sup’ (Culture Supply) is an exploration of African culture, afro descendants, afro-futurism culture and of course the world: “The concept is to share afro rooted art, music, painting, photography, dance, poetry, any kind of exhibition, storytelling, fashion, knowledge and every kind of artistic performance. We aim to connect different communities together and always remember that we are one and all coming from the same place. Get together through the medium of art and knowledge.” This is the first edition of Cult’ Sup’ to be published online - a different way to reach the audience in corona times. Each week we’ve been introducing one of four parts: ‘Roots Connection’ with Dumama & Kechou, ‘Sooth moves Smooth’ with Katerinha and ‘Open Wound’ with Nane Kahle have been released so far and coming up tomorrow is ‘The Artist's Womb before a Goodbye’ with Thomias Radin.

Wir verabschieden uns von Ihisa & Alem:

Ihisa Adelio - Afrikawissenschaftlerin, Kuratorin und Assistenz der Geschäftsführung und Künstlerische Leitung - verlässt Oyoun für ein Master Studium im Ausland, mit einem lachenden und tränendem Auge wünschen wir ihr alles Gute für die neue Herausforderung und danken für die großartige, bereichernde Zusammenarbeit. Du wirst uns sehr fehlen! Alem Kebebew - Veranstaltungsbetreuer und engagierter Menschenrechtsaktivist, den wir in die wohlverdiente Rente verabschieden dürfen. Wir danken ihm für die wichtigen Impulse, die Inspiration und wünschen ihm alles Gute!

Gleichzeitig freuen wir uns, die neuen Personen des Oyoun vorzustellen:

Dami Choi - Kunstphilosophin, Forscherin und die Nachfolgerin von Ihisa. In der Assistenz der Geschäftsführung und Künstlerischen leitung unterstützt Dami die inhaltliche Umsetzung dekolonialer, klassenkritischer und queerfeministischer Perspektiven und setzt dabei ihre eigene kuratorische Agenda um. Khadija Alamin - Komponistin, Produzentin, Vocalist und DJ. Sie bereichert uns mit ihrer Erfahrung in der Veranstaltungsbetreuung und übernimmt u.a. die Produktion der eigenen Podcast Reihe: OyoUniverse. Christina Groneberg ist Veranstaltungskauffrau und eine Kennerin der Kulturszene durch und durch. Als Expertin u.a. zum Thema Booking und Produktion unterstützt und inspiriert sie eigene Formate, z.B. zu Black History Month.

Das Oyoun Team freut sich auf das, was im neuen Jahr kommt: von unserem Tiny House über check! ein empowering Jugend- und KIndertheater sowie dem amber Festival - Postdigitale Ignoranz, uvm. Weiterhin werden wir unser Angebot für die Nachbarschaft ausbauen, so auch mit Theaterpädagoginnen Lorena Valdenegro und Senait Sebhatleab, die eine Workshopreihe zu kritischem Weißsein für Kitas, Eltern und Erzieher*innen im Oyoun anbieten.

We are saying goodbye to Ihisa & Alem:

Ihisa Adelio - scholar of African Studies, curator, assistant manager and artistic director - is leaving Oyoun for a masters programme abroad. With one smiling and one tearful eye, we wish her all the best for the new challenges and thank her for the enriching collaboration. We will miss you very much! Alem Kebebew - event supervisor and dedicated human rights activist, whom we are saying goodbye to into his well-deserved retirement. We thank him for the important impulses, inspiration, and wish him all the best!

At the same time, we are happy to introduce some new team members:

Dami Choi - art philosopher, researcher and successor to Ihisa. In the role of Assistant Executive and Artistic Director, Dami supports the creation of content with decolonial, class-critical, and queer-feminist perspectives while implementing her own curatorial agenda. Khadija Alamin - composer, producer, vocalist, and DJ. She brings her experience in event management to the team. She will be working on her own podcast series and OyoUniverse. Christina Groneberg is an event manager and a connoisseur of the cultural scene through and through. As an expert on the topics of booking and production, she supports and inspires her own formats, e.g. Black History Month.

The Oyoun team is looking forward to what is coming in the new year: from our Tiny House to check! an empowering youth and children's theater as well as the amber Festival - Postdigital Ignorance, and much more. We will continue to expand our offerings for the neighborhood too, including a collaboration with theater educators Lorena Valdenegro and Senait Sebhatleab, who will offer a workshop series at Oyoun on critical whiteness for child-care centers, parents, and educators.
