2019 Louis Jadot
Burgundy En Primeur

The winter of 2019 was particularly mild and sunny in Burgundy. It was also unusually dry, with 40% less rain than the seasonal average.

A cold snap in April brought frosts, just as the first buds were appearing. The most seriously affected vines were in the earlier deveoping Maconnais and Cote Chalonnaise.

A wet April helped replenish ground water reserves somewhat. The cold conditions continued right through to early June. This resulted in a longer flowering than would be considered ideal, causing irregular fruit set in the Chardonnay.

Temperatures took a dramatic turn and there were heatwaves at the end of both June and July. Rain returned in stormy August but by now it was clear this wold not be a large vintage.

The combination of poor fruit set and lack of water in the grape pulps produced yields for the whites which are reduced as much as 50% against average. Yields for the later-ripening reds are a little better. The Pinot berries were small and thick-skinned but achieved full ripeness.

The finished whites are concentrated and balanced, with fresh acidity. Reds, across the board, are impressively endowed with abundant ripe fruit and concentrated phenolics. They are both structured and harmonious.

Highly respected Maison Louis Jadot owns parcels of vines in many of the very finest sites in Burgundy and controls many others. Domaine and Maison wines are made with equal care and attention to detail. In 2019 they have produced a portfolio of wines to equal some of the finest vintages in their long history.

The wines are offered en primeur, ETA January 2022.

En primeur - all prices are under bond.
Duty, delivery and VAT will be charged when the wines are ready for delivery.

GRAND CRUS

Clos Saint Denis, Domaine Gagey (Louis Jadot)
£1450 per 6
The 2019 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru demonstrates a little more amplitude than the Clos de la Roche because of the one-third stem addition. It is exquisitely defined, offering precise black fruit laced with melted tar and graphite notes, and wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins framing the judiciously spiced black fruit that segues into a very harmonious, grippy finish. This is one of Jadot’s best cuvées this vintage. 2025-2050
95-97 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Grands Echezeaux, Maison Louis Jadot
£1280 per 6
The 2019 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is a clear step up from the Echézeaux, offering a gorgeous marine-influenced bouquet, touches of oyster shell infusing the mixture of red and black fruit, and wonderful mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied, burly and intense with an almost "heaving" structure that grips the palate, all with utmost finesse. Fist, velvet glove, etc.... it’s all here. 2025-2055
95-97 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Echezeaux, Domaine Louis Jadot
£1030 per 6
The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a pleasant bouquet of predominantly red fruit laced with cedar, autumn leaves and Earl Grey, gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine balance and poise. There is a slightly grainy texture toward a finish of modest length. This should evolve into a sedate but appealing Echézeaux. 2023-2040
92-94 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Chapelle Chambertin, Domaine Louis Jadot
£990 per 6
The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet of raspberry coulis, wild strawberry and crushed limestone aromas and a little singed leather in the background; there is fine complexity and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, soy-tinged red fruit and a slightly conservative, restrained finish. More cohesive than the Charmes-Chambertin, it doesn’t quite convey the complexity of the Clos-de-Bèze, yet it should still age with style. 2024-2042
92-94 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Clos de la Roche, Maison Louis Jadot
£990 per 6
The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a beguiling bouquet of pure dark cherry and violet aromas, quite mineral-driven and wonderfully delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine grip, and touches of graphite and white pepper toward the sustained finish. This feels cohesive and long, and it should age with style for 20–30 years. 2025-2048
94-96 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Charmes Chambertin, Maison Louis Jadot
£990 per 6
The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, comes across a little tight and awkward on the nose compared to the other three Grand Crus that I tasted from the appellation; it never quite coheres. The palate is better: quite lactic in the mouth, with a smooth texture and espresso and dark chocolate notes that at this early stage mask the terroir expression. Hopefully that will be assimilated with time, but I will remain prudent for now. Two barrels produced. 2023-2033
89-91 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Clos Vougeot, Domaine Louis Jadot
£570 per 6
The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is very tight on the nose and needed more encouragement from the glass to reveal sultry black fruit mixed with melted tar and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite "solid" in structure, and well defined, revealing a touch of blood orange on the finish. This is a finely crafted Clos de Vougeot that should age well over the next 20–25 years. 2023-2045
93-95 points Neal Martin, Vinous

PREMIER CRUS

Gevrey Chambertin, Clos Saint Jacques, Domaine Louis Jadot
£715 per 6
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is surprisingly reticent at first, offering quite strong earthy aromas and gradually opening with sage, thyme and mint. I feel that compared to the other Clos Saint-Jacques, the aromatics never quite click into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with the best backbone of the four Gevrey Premier Crus tasted from Jadot. Spicy black pepper and clove notes furnish the middle and the finish, which feels sustained and persistent, yet I wonder whether it will have the unadulterated charm of the Les Cazetiers when in bottle. We will find out soon. 2024-2042
92-94 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Gevrey Chambertin, Les Cazetiers, Maison Louis Jadot
£405 per 6
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has an exquisite bouquet of crystalline red berry fruit laced with minerals, wonderfully delineated and focused. The palate is smooth and sensual on the entry, and very cohesive, with a perfect line of acidity. Pure and ravishing, armed with a satin-textured finish, this is going to be very difficult to resist once in bottle. Superb. 2024-2040
93-95 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Gevrey Chambertin, Estournelles Saint Jacques, Domaine Louis Jadot
£405 per 6
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an arresting and very vanilla-y bouquet that is showing too much new oak at the moment. This is very high-toned, with orange blossom and bunches of violets rendering it Vosne-like in style. The palate is by far the sweetest and feels ostentatious in style, at the expense of terroir expression when juxtaposed against the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Long and candied on the finish. I hope this will become more toned down with bottle age. 2023-2038
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Chambolle Musigny, Les Fuees, Domaine Louis Jadot
£405 per 6
The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru is quite perfumed on the nose, offering small red cherries mixed with blueberry and light seawater aromas. This opens nicely in the glass and reveals hidden facets. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous. Perhaps the most elegant of Jadot’s Chambolles, it will vie with the Feusselottes as their best from this appellation. 2024-2040
92-94 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Nuits Saint Georges, Les Boudots, Domaine Gagey (Louis Jadot)
£370 per 6
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru offers good intensity on the nose, which offers a mixture of red and black fruit and a faint seawater tinge. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and nicely integrated oak. Black cherries and wild strawberry form the entry, and there is a light smear of vanilla toward the finish. Moderate in length. This Les Boudots should drink well for the next decade and a half. 2022-2036
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Pommard, Grands Epenots, Maison Louis Jadot
£320 per 6
The 2019 Pommard Grands Epenots 1er Cru, which is bought half in wine and half in grapes, has a very expressive and almost Volnay-like bouquet of ebullient red cherry, raspberry, violet and blood orange aromas. The palate is very well balanced, offering succulent red berry fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Fleshy yet structured, as you would expect from this vintage. Very smooth on the finish. This is a noble Côte de Beaune from Jadot and maybe their best cuvée from that part of Burgundy. 2023-2040
91-93 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Morey Saint Denis, Clos des Ormes, Domaine Louis Jadot
£290 per 6
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes 1er Cru is nicely composed on the nose, featuring blackberry, sous-bois and light cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and quite gentle in the mouth, with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a pleasant saline/briny note that attracts you back for another sip. One of the most elegant Morey Premier Crus this year. 2023-2036
91-93 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Volnay, Clos des Chenes, Domaine Louis Jadot
£270 per 6
The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a precocious bouquet featuring ample red cherries, kirsch and light balsamic aromas, hints of potpourri emerging with time. The palate is sweet on the entry, offering candied red fruit laced with orange zest and vanilla pod. There remains some new oak to be integrated, though this possesses a lovely silky mouthfeel and shows tenderness on the aftertaste. Very fine. 2023-2037
91-93 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Volnay, Clos de la Barre, Maison Louis Jadot
£270 per 6
The 2019 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru demonstrates more finesse and coherence compared to the Santenots, offering pure dark cherry and boysenberry fruit mixed with light violet aromas. The lush, generous palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky-smooth texture and layers of black cherry and cassis toward the seductive finish. Just very... Volnay. 2023-2036
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Savigny Les Beaune, La Dominode, Domaine Louis Jadot,
£170 per 6
The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune La Dominode 1er Cru was more closed than the Clos des Guettes on the nose, presenting darker fruit tinged with iodine and light iris petals. Fine delineation. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins, fine grip and edginess and a subtle white pepper and clove note toward the finish. This is a very well-crafted Savigny that should drink well for 10–15 years. 2023-2036
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

VILLAGE

Santenay Clos de Malte, Domaine Louis Jadot
£115 per 6
The 2019 Santenay "Clos de Malte" has a clean, pure bouquet featuring morello cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dark berries and a touch of spice on the slightly soft finish. Drink over the next 6–8 years.

GRAND CRUS

Montrachet, Maison Louis Jadot
£1600 per 3 bot
The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru is tasked with following the stunning Chevalier-Montrachet and, to be frank, it never achieves the same degree of intensity on the nose, coming across rather conservative by comparison. The palate is well balanced with a tang of marmalade enlivening the opening. Very good weight and persistence, as you would demand from a "Monty," yet it does not possess the swagger and hubris of the superior Chevalier. 2025-2045
93-95 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Chevalier Montrachet, Domaine des Heritiers Louis Jadot
£1200 per 3 bot
The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is beautifully defined on the nose, featuring wonderful crushed limestone and gunflint scents that permeate the green apple aromas. Very focused and intense. The palate is extremely well balanced with a powerful opening, very saline and so full of energy. Enormous weight and presence toward the finish. This is an outstanding Chevalier-Montrachet from Jadot. 2025-2055
96-98 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Corton Charlemagne, Domaine des Heritiers Louis Jadot
£870 per 6 bot
The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a very tempting bouquet of lemon curd, frangipane, almond and light white chocolate scents. It is still a little oaky, but that will integrate with time. The palate is well balanced with a rounded, marmalade-tinged opening, then veers toward a curiously "fishy" second half, almost like a Chenin Blanc in style! Maybe this is just a phase it’s going through. Give it 3–5 years in bottle. 2022-2038
91-93 points Neal Martin, Vinous

PREMIER CRUS

Puligny Montrachet, Les Combettes, Domaine Louis Jadot
£435 per 6
The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a very discreet bouquet, maybe without the same degree of complexity and terroir expression as the Les Referts. The palate is well balanced, offering orange peel on the entry, good weight and an appealing waxy texture. It just requires a little more tension and mineralité toward the finish to catch up with Jadot’s other Puligny Premier Crus. 2022-2032
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Puligny Montrachet, Les Referts, Domaine Louis Jadot
£325 per 6
The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a subtle, nuanced bouquet of apple blossom and wet limestone aromas infused with touches of yellow flowers. The palate is well balanced, displaying a fine bead of acidity, and rounded on the entry, offering light passion fruit and dried mango notes. This segues into a more spicy final third and a fine saline finish. Enjoy over the next 12–15 years. 2023+2035
92-94 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle, Domaine Duc de Magenta (Louis Jadot)
£325 per 6
The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose, offering scents of honeysuckle and yellow plum, then lemon thyme and light crushed stone aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Not quite as harmonious as the Abbaye de Morgeot on the finish; this is slightly more attenuated and bitter at the moment. But it has good potential for a Chassagne made in a classic style. 2022-2032
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Chassagne Montrachet, Grande Montagne, Maison Louis Jadot
£315 per 6
The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Grande Montagne 1er Cru has a light apple blossom bouquet, nicely defined touches of nectarine and a background note of mint emerging with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Good weight and tension and a lightly spiced finish. This is a thoroughly enjoyable and well-crafted Chassagne. 2022-2036
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Meursault Charmes, Domaine Louis Jadot
£335 per 6
The 2019 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru was missing the degree of energy conveyed by the preceding Meursault Blagny, coming across a little static by comparison. The palate is rounded and honeyed on the entry, offering notes of dried honey, peach skin, nectarine and a dab of spice. What it needs is more tension to balance the richness; it just falls a bit short in that respect. 2022-2029
89-91 points Neal Martin, Vinous

VILLAGE

Meursault Narvaux, Domaine Louis Jadot
£225 per 6
The 2019 Meursault Narvaux is fragrant and much better defined on the nose compared to the Les Forges, the honeysuckle, flint and light white flower aromas gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, quite tensile and focused. Touches of lemon curd and white chocolate furnish the finish. Narvaux is a great vineyard, and that shows through here. This should age the best out of Jadot’s Meursault Village Crus. 2022-2034
90-92 points Neal Martin, Vinous

Pernand Vergelesses Les Combottes, Domaine Gagey (Louis Jadot)
£130 per 6
The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Combottes is not shy in delivering tropical mango and pineapple on the nose. The palate follows suit with unabashed tropical notes, although it does tone everything down toward the finish, which is more linear and more pithy than expected. Quite mercurial in the glass. I suspect this should drink well for 4–6 years once in bottle. 2021-2028
87-89 points Neal Martin, Vinous
