Wishing you all the best of the season!

Thank you for your engagement and support. This year, maybe more than ever before, it has made a huge difference, as we confront ever more aggressive tactics from the mining industry and its government enablers, in Canada and around the world. In the face of a global pandemic, on top of the multiple crises we were already facing – climate, biodiversity, inequality, racial justice, migration, and more…

It has indeed been quite a year.

Following initial onslaught of COVID-19, we worked with partner groups to publish a report, "Voices from the Ground: How the Global Mining Industry is Profiting from the COVID-19 Pandemic" on the way mining interests took advantage of it to push ahead with extraction, marginalizing community opposition and putting mineworkers and communities at grave risk. It's available in five languages!

Together with our US colleagues, Earthworks, we also published a report on mine waste dumps, "Safety First: Guidelines for Responsible Mine Tailings Management" that sets out guidelines for safety, respect for affected communities, and corporate accountability that must be incorporated into any tailings standards or regulations.

And following up on last year's big conference, Turning Down the Heat: Can We Mine Our Way Out of the Climate Crisis?, we published the conference report and held a really interesting online roundtable on the complications and promises of the renewable energy transition in the context of a pandemic. We took great encouragement from being part of civil society's collective efforts to ensure that the pandemic does not set the stage for ever more vicious forms of financialized profiteering and extractivism, calling instead for a just recovery for all and proclaiming that we cannot return to a normal that was so divisive and deadly.

Spotlight on Nova Scotia and the No Open Pit Mining Excavation campaign (NOPE)

One of the highlights of the year was online screenings of the documentary film The Shadow of Gold and round table discussions that we organized as part of our work to build public awareness around the real costs of mining. We used that event to highlight the great work that Nova Scotians have been doing to protect their province from new gold mining projects, including one that threatens the beautiful St. Mary's River. It has been our privilege to support groups like the St. Mary's River Association, Sustainable Northern Nova Scotia, and the Ecology Action Centre that have been doing amazing work, even during the pandemic, including a dedicated web site where you can learn all about the NOPE (No Open Pit Mining Excavation) campaign, and yes, donate.

Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Dave Gunning has even written and recorded a powerful new song with an accompanying video in support of the St. Mary's River Association and the campaign. It's really beautiful, and I couldn't think of a better gift to leave you with.

On behalf of the staff and directors of MiningWatch Canada, thank you for your support and engagement! We'd like to wish you and your loved ones all the best for the coming year. We really appreciate your involvement, in whatever form it takes – it's all important to us and to the communities we work with, whether it's sharing information, writing letters, signing petitions, lobbying, protesting – it all makes a difference.

You can make a donation online, or by cheque. We’ll be very grateful for whatever you can give! Bear in mind that you can also support MiningWatch's work through our sister organisation, the Canary Research Institute for Mining, Environment, and Health. It carries out research and education activities through MiningWatch, and Canadian donors to the Canary Institute get charitable receipts for their donations.

With warmest wishes for you and yours for the holiday season – in whatever tradition you celebrate – and wishing you all the best in the New Year,

Jamie Kneen
Co-Manager
on behalf of the staff and Board Directors of MiningWatch Canada
