Program Updates

Successfully wrapped up the Cultural Broker project at Jan 8th!

1st place postcard winner, Ruby Yang - Mental Health
The Cultural Broker program consisted of 25 youths from 6 different Minnesota Asian American organizations. All coming together to learn multimedia and marketing skills from October 2020 - January 2021. They were then asked to put those skills into use every week by creating wonderful and purposeful videos and postcards. Each product surrounded relevant topics such as, COVID-19 precautions and smoking/vaping preventions in our communities. Not only did they create their products in English,
they also created products in their heritage language, which helps reach a wider range of audiences and multiple communities.

Youth also received training on each topic every week to understand the impact they will make with their work. The cultural brokers had Elle Mark, who is the Prevention Education manager of the Know The Truth Prevention program, present on smoking and vaping prevention. They also had social media marketing training from Brian Herder who is Chief Creative Officer at Russell Herder, and many more presenters during the 13 weeks.

Special Spotlight, Youth Story - Monica Xiong

During the Cultural Broker's program, Monica Xiong discovered the benefits of simultaneously embracing her American and Hmong cultures.  Xiong has learned to practice bicultural healthy living by embracing the two cultures rather than losing a part of her identity and conforming completely to her host culture. Xiong stated, "I'm not fluent in Hmong and there isn't a lot about the Hmong people that I knew, so bicultural healthy living helped me find ways to interact with my [Hmong] culture more. I started getting into Hmong food more and I recently learned a few recipes. I also started reading a lot more Hmong books to help me become fluent in the language". Xiong continues to find practices in her bicultural healthy living through active involvement through Hmong church, Girl Scouts for Hmong girls, and Center for Hmong Arts and Talents (CHAT). Since the start of the pandemic and distance learning, Monica Xiong has had a lack of interaction with her community. She has mostly felt a direct impact in the Hmong community.

For the last several months, most interactions have been virtual, and social media has been a popular method of connection. Most of Xiong's social media following consists of family members and Hmong youth just like her. She notices a lack of interaction from the community, and she wants her audience to be more interested, engaged, and connected in posts. Being a part of the AMA Cultural Broker's program has motivated Xiong to create meaningful content for her community, more than just for herself. Since Middle School, Xiong has always been interested in Graphic Design, using Adobe tools to create posters and videos. Not only was Xiong able to refine those graphic design skills, but she was also able to learn about pressing issues in her community through the Cultural Broker's program. Xiong hopes to pursue a career in Marketing, using her background in graphic design.

AMA Youth successfully combat the Substance Abuse

Our “Youth In Charge,” Initiative was recognized by the Whitehouse, and featured at the First Lady’s October Prevention Month twit to highlight youth’s success.   “Youth In Charge” Initiative has successfully reached more than 2,000+ youth of color, especially African and Asian American immigrant and refugee youth, through a bicultural lens. The Initiative honors each youth’s culture, and encourages them to see cultural pride and community togetherness are effective ways to enhance resilience and combat substance usage.

Under the “Youth In Charge” Initiative, youth celebrate ethnic holidays, practice cultural dances/sports, and create culturally and linguistically appropriate print and digital materials for parents and distribute them through networks of cultural communities with information about sharing cultural assets and values to prevent substance usage.

Next project our youth will support - is the state-wide educational project "Don't Discount Your Life" Initiative.   Since keeping commercial tobacco prices high is the most effective tool to help people quit smoking and prevent youth from starting. Tobacco companies spend billions of dollars to reduce the price of commercial tobacco. Discounts and coupons are used to attract and addict youth, women, BIPOC, low-income, and LGBTQ communities. Cheap commercial tobacco is pervasive and fosters racial inequity and health disparities.

People can stop the tobacco industry from targeting our communities with cheap commercial tobacco through a price discount ordinance. An ordinance would set a minimum price on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco and prohibit the redemption of tobacco coupons and price promotions. Learn more at dontdiscountmylife.org.

Sitting in the bleachers next to another parent. This is where perspectives can be shifted. Equipping coalition/team/community members with skills to effectively facilitate these conversations without raising defensiveness provides a significant impact. In these skill-building workshops, Jason will introduce the concepts of “Let’s Talk” while providing examples of the advantages of this communication style versus other approaches

The 2020 election and the pandemic have accelerated the polarization of the media in the United States, hardening Americans into two information silos shaped principally by partisanship. This fractured media ecosystem has serious consequences for American democracy and institutions, from national elections to decision making at City Hall.

Importantly, the one medium that can break through the partisan divide, and bring people together around a common set of facts, is local news.

The 2021 Knight Media Forum, taking place online, will examine how local news innovators and their supporters are responding to unprecedented times, and offer practical solutions for newsrooms and funders seeking to promote more informed and engaged communities.
