Kia ora Kāpiti

There’s a lot going on this month with our summer events kicking off in earnest this week. We’ve got Sports Play in the Park, Kids’ Aquafit, a Mitre10 Buggy Walk, Yoga by the Pool,  Kids’ Yoga in the Park and Paws in the Park – it’s really all happening in Kāpiti this week! Check out our Upcoming Council events page for more info and read on for other Kāpiti tips and reminders!

Mā te wā!

  Our people and communities

Splash or dash – what’s your thing?

It’s all happening at our pools this summer! If you're looking for exercise, recreation or swimming lessons, our three pools, Coastlands Aquatic Centre, Ōtaki Pool and Waikanae Pool, have it all. And if you’re more of a casual splasher, our free Splash Pads at Haruātai Park (Ōtaki) and Marine Gardens (Raumati) will be your happy place!

For those who enjoy a little more adrenalin, Ōtaki Pool’s Te Mania Auheke - the Slippery Slope is our awesome outdoor waterslide. It’s open 1–3pm most afternoons during the school holidays, weather permitting.

Summer reading, had me a blast!

Summer is the perfect time to dive into a great book, and our four public libraries – Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Ōtaki and Paekākāriki – have it all going on this summer, with regular events and workshops, eBooks and eAudio books, a learning centre, computers, newspapers and magazines, music and more.

Kids can now report in for our children’s summer reading programme and the adult and teen readers can enjoy our Reading challenge

Library card design competition

Is your kid or someone you know a budding artist?

We're currently inviting all 5 – 15 year olds to put their creative talents to the test to design our next library card.

The judges will pick two winners – one aged 5 – 8 years, and the second aged 9 – 15 years. The judges will be looking for creative use of colour, and a design that portrays your view of the Kāpiti Coast District and/or libraries.

Entries close on the 31st of January 2021.

  Hot tip

Is it safe to swim?

Kāpiti’s beaches and rivers have you covered if you’re looking to take a dip, go for a surf or just splash around. They’re generally pretty clean and it’s usually safe for a swim, but sometimes the weather can change that.

You can check if it’s safe to swim any time this summer on our website

Updated daily, the Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA) website also has information about water quality at all of the best swimming spots in Kāpiti and around New Zealand.

  Work updates

SH1/Raumati Road intersection closure

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are continuing with their work to revoke the old State Highway 1 this month with works starting at the intersection of Raumati Road yesterday.

The intersection of old State Highway 1 and Raumati Road will be closed for approximately three months while they work to build a new roundabout. Traffic will be diverted via Ihakara Street and Rimu Road during this time.

If you have any enquiries about this work, please contact Waka Kotahi on 0800 723 775 or visit www.nzta.govt.nz for more information.

Council leading the way to reduce construction waste

Council's contractor on the Ōtaki Civic Theatre and the Paraparaumu Memorial Hall upgrades is aiming to hit our target of sending 30% less waste to landfill.

To achieve this, they’re sorting and recycling waste that would have been sent to the dump. Contractors sort waste timber, metal, concrete, cardboard, cable, hazardous and rubbish as it’s removed. It’s then sent to the appropriate place for the next stage in its lifecycle.
All external cladding weatherboards on the Paraparaumu Memorial Hall have been removed and donated to Zero Waste Ōtaki where it’ll be up-cycled for other purposes.
